Snow squall warning in effect for:

  • Sault Ste. Marie – St. Joseph Island
  • Searchmont – Montreal River Harbour – Batchawana Bay

A very strong lake effect snow band continues to affect areas near the eastern Lake Superior shore early this morning. The most intense portion of this band is north of Sault Ste. Marie but is slowly sinking southward.

Snowfall rates of a few cm per hour along with brief periods of near zero visibility are likely under this band. This band is expected to affect the Sault Ste. Marie area as well as highway 17 early this morning before moving south of the area.

Local accumulations between Sault Ste. Marie and Montreal River may exceed 15 cm before the activity tapers off later this morning.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.

Snow squall warnings are issued when bands of snow form that produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities.
