Terrace Bay Declares a Precautionary State of Emergency UPDATE 3:00 a.m.

3:00 a.m. Repair’s to the Terrace Bay ice plant remain ongoing and are nearing completion.

All expectations are for a return to normal for residents and businesses on Simcoe Plaza by Saturday morning.

The Township fitness room will be open regular hours starting at 10 a.m.

11 p.m.: Work continues on repairs to the Terrace Bay ice plant. To be clear there is no ammonia leak. All actions thus far were precautionary in nature. The declared state of emergency remains in place and will likely continue until the work is complete.

The chemical is being transferred by trained professionals via closed loop system to tanker trailer for proper disposal.

Once again, at this time there remains no cause for evacuation. We do not anticipate this will change.

7 p.m.: There is little change in the situation at this time. Resources are on hand from Thunder Bay and all branches of emergency services are in the community.

At this time evacuation is still not deemed necessary. We do not anticipate this will change. However, in the event that it does, we will post information here and through regular media. If drastic action were required into the night we have the resources to go door to door.

As a precautionary measure, some businesses and residents from Simcoe Plaza have been vacated in order to ensure safe distance in the immediate area of our efforts to fix this problem.

ATTENTION – FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2017.

Due to problems with the Refrigeration Plant at the Terrace Bay Community Centre, it will be necessary to depressurize the Ammonia System. No leak has occurred and no ammonia has been released.

A State of Emergency has been Declared for precautionary reasons and to allow for adequate resources to be dispatched to safely assist us with this problem.

The Municipality has been in constant contact with the MOE and other agencies in order to safely rectify the situation.

At this time, no Evacuation is deemed necessary though some businesses on Simcoe Plaza will be asked to vacate later today as a precautionary measure, while the situation is dealt with.

However, should the situation change, proper notification will be communicated through appropriate media channels. Please stay tuned to local radio for the most up to date information.
