{"id":977,"date":"2017-02-27T10:26:01","date_gmt":"2017-02-27T15:26:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=977"},"modified":"2017-02-27T10:47:03","modified_gmt":"2017-02-27T15:47:03","slug":"ontario-investing-in-first-nation-communities-in-the-manitoulin-island-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2017\/02\/27\/ontario-investing-in-first-nation-communities-in-the-manitoulin-island-area\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario Investing in First Nation Communities in the Manitoulin Island Area"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Feb 27, 2017 @ 10:26<\/p>\n<p>Ontario is helping to support local economic growth, culture, tourism and infrastructure development for First Nation communities on Manitoulin Island and the surrounding area.<\/p>\n<p>Through the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grants.gov.on.ca\/GrantsPortal\/en\/OntarioGrants\/GrantOpportunities\/PRDR015641.html\">Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program<\/a>\u00a0(ACCGP) and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/funding-indigenous-economic-development\">Aboriginal Economic Development Fund<\/a>\u00a0(AEDF) the province is investing in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Architectural drawings for an elders and youth centre for Sheguiandah First Nation on Manitoulin Island<\/li>\n<li>An economic strategic plan for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheshegwaning.org\/\">Sheshegwaning First Nation<\/a>\u00a0on Manitoulin Island.<\/li>\n<li>Renovations to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dokisfirstnation.com\/\">Dokis First Nation&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0museum and cultural centre to convert part of the museum and cultural centre into classrooms that will be available to local and regional school boards.<\/li>\n<li>Installation of a parking lot and digital signage at the Four Directions Community Complex in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aundeckomnikaningfn.com\/\">Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation<\/a>\u00a0to make the local community centre more accessible and inviting for elders, youth and visitors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Supporting economic development in First Nation communities is one of many steps on Ontario&#8217;s journey of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. It reflects the government&#8217;s commitment to work with Indigenous partners, creating a better future for everyone in the province.<\/p>\n<p>Investing in infrastructure, culture and tourism in First Nation communities is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>QUICK FACTS<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Through the AEDF, Ontario provided\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheshegwaning.org\/\">Sheshegwaning First Nation<\/a>\u00a0with $48,000.<\/li>\n<li>Through the ACCGP, Ontario provided Sheguinadah First Nation with $100,000,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dokisfirstnation.com\/\">Dokis First Nation<\/a>\u00a0with $67,235 and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aundeckomnikaningfn.com\/\">Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation<\/a>\u00a0with $293,699.<\/li>\n<li>From 2003 to 2016, through the ACCGP Ontario has provided more than $38 million in capital grants to Indigenous communities.<\/li>\n<li>Ontario is investing a total of $95 million in the AEDF over ten years. The AEDF was launched in 2014 and has three funding streams: Regional Partnership Grants, Economic Diversification Grants and the Business and Community Fund.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-980\" src=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/AboriginalCommunityCapitalGrants-300x157.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" \/>The Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program (ACCGP) is an Ontario government program designed to promote Indigenous self-reliance by funding community capital Projects that provide a delivery point for community services and business activity. The Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation (MIRR) administers the program.\r\n\r\nThe program supports construction or renovation\/retrofitting Projects of community, learning, and\/or business facilities by providing funding for three Project Stages in the facility development process;\u00a0Feasibility study completion;\u00a0Design completion; and\u00a0Construction\/ Renovation\/Retrofitting.\r\n\r\nEligible applicants may submit one application per Project Stage per year. Eligible applicants may receive funding in each Project Stage once over a five-year period.
