But, not taking the necessary precautions can quickly result in tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>No ice is &#8220;<em>safe ice<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0Underlying water currents or air pockets can create thin ice, even in the coldest temperatures.\u00a0Snowmobilers can&#8217;t see this until it&#8217;s too late.\u00a0There were nine ice-related deaths during the 2016-17 snowmobile season.\u00a0To put that number into perspective, there were only eight such deaths in the last five seasons combined.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last season was a 15-year high in overall snowmobile deaths.\u00a0A total of 27 people did not make it home safely to their families after heading out for a snowmobile ride.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speed, alcohol\/drug consumption, riding on unsafe ice, losing control, and other poor decisions accounted for the majority of the fatalities.\u00a0These factors change very little from year to year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The OPP is committed to saving lives on Ontario&#8217;s highways, trails and waterways through high visibility patrols and enforcement in order to reduce preventable injuries and death.\u00a0The East Algoma OPP will continue their snow vehicle patrols throughout the season to ensure the safety of all snowmobile operators and passengers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The OPP reminds snowmobilers of the importance of making smart choices. \u00a0Riding sober, slowing down, avoiding lakes and rivers, using prescribed snowmobile trails, and being extra cautious at night, just to name a few&#8221;, comments Constable Phil Young, East Algoma OPP.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For further information on safe snowmobiling and trails in Ontario, please see the OFSC or OPP websites at:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofsc.on.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.ofsc.on.ca<\/a> \u00a0\u00a0or\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opp.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.opp.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jan 23, 2018 @ 15:54 Snowmobile Safety Week runs January 20-28, 2018.\u00a0The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding snowmobilers to ride safely for an enjoyable winter season.\u00a0Snowmobiling is one of the joys of a Canadian winter.
