{"id":9264,"date":"2018-01-04T08:27:47","date_gmt":"2018-01-04T13:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=9264"},"modified":"2018-01-04T15:04:34","modified_gmt":"2018-01-04T20:04:34","slug":"noww-celebrates-20-years-with-one-of-its-biggest-contests-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2018\/01\/04\/noww-celebrates-20-years-with-one-of-its-biggest-contests-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"NOWW celebrates 20 years with one of its biggest contests yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Jan 4, 2018 @ 08:27<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-2018-01-04-at-7.29.05-AM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9266\" src=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-2018-01-04-at-7.29.05-AM-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-2018-01-04-at-7.29.05-AM-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-2018-01-04-at-7.29.05-AM.jpg 592w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Writers across the region who may be the next literary star of Northwestern Ontario, or maybe trying writing for the first time, or simply have a story inside dying to be told, are once again being given the opportunity to shine during the annual Northwestern Ontario Writer\u2019s Workshop writing contest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">The annual writing contest officially opened on Jan. 1, 2018, with five categories to enter, including poetry, short fiction, historical fiction, creative non-fiction, and the Bill MacDonald Prize for Prose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u201cEach year NOWW&#8217;s annual writing contest does something bigger and better,\u201d said Jodene Wylie, contest coordinator. \u201cIf you&#8217;re a reader and a\u00a0writer &#8211; we want to impress you and motivate you to pull out that pen, pull up to your computer and get writing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Once again, NOWW is looking to some of Canada\u2019s most celebrated literary figures to judge this year\u2019s contest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-2018-01-04-at-7.29.20-AM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9265\" src=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-2018-01-04-at-7.29.20-AM-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-2018-01-04-at-7.29.20-AM-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Screen-2018-01-04-at-7.29.20-AM.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Governor General Award winner and parliamentary poet, George Elliott Clarke, will judge the poetry category; Governor General\u2019s Award winner, Ross King, author of <i>Leonardo and the Last Supper<\/i>, will judge the historical fiction category; <i>Lullabies for Little Criminals<\/i> author and Governor General\u2019s Award winner, Heather O\u2019Neill, will judge the short fiction category; the creative non-fiction category will be judged by Helen Humphrey, author of <i>Leaving Earth<\/i>and <i>Afterimage<\/i>, which won the Writer\u2019s Trust Fiction Prize; and Michael Christie, born in Thunder Bay and author of\u00a0 <i>The Beggar\u2019s Garden<\/i>, which was short listed for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, will judge the Bill MacDonald Prize for Prose in Creative Non-fiction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u201cOne of\u00a0NOWW&#8217;s goals this year was to bring some of the best authors from across Canada to judge our writing contest,\u201d Wylie said. \u201c\u00a0The calibre of their writing is\u00a0outstanding. They&#8217;re award-winning, they&#8217;re well published, and they&#8217;re iconic. Having authors like them judge our contest\u00a0is a real honour and such a great way to kick off our contest this year.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">According to Wylie, last year\u2019s writing contest was a huge success with more than 160 writers from across the country, and even the world, entering a piece of work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Despite so much competition, Wylie encourages anyone with a story to tell to enter this year\u2019s contest, saying the NOWW Annual Writing Contest provides writers with an opportunity to express themselves and experiment with new ideas, concepts, and genres. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"gmail-MsoNoSpacing\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">The contest closes on March 31, 2018, and the winners will be announced at the NOWW Literary Gala on May 5, 2018.
