Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost<\/strong><\/p>\n

Scripture: Matthew 22:15-22\u00a0 Give to God the things that are God\u2019s<\/em><\/p>\n

Jesus\u2019 answer to the Pharisees may not be as enigmatic as it seems. It doesn\u2019t require the sorts of mental or spiritual gymnastics that Christians have often used for it. It\u2019s really quite simple, once you realize one thing: What, in all of Creation \u2013 from your money and possessions to your time, effort, allegiances and even your very identity and being \u2013 could there possible be that is the emperor\u2019s and not also God\u2019s first?<\/p>\n

Just imagine the coin they held up for Jesus to examine. Sure, it had the emperor\u2019s image and title on it at that point, but where did the metal come from? God\u2019s Creation. Where did the skills and talents needed to make it into a coin come from? People created by God. Sometime later in history, that coin probably got thrown into the melting fire \u2026 and Caesar\u2019s image dripped away \u2026. but even then, the metal was still God\u2019s creation.<\/p>\n

But let\u2019s not forget about that image itself. That image of Caesar on that coin: What is that<\/em> other than an image of a human face? The first Creation story in Genesis proclaims: \u201cSo God created humankind in his<\/em> image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.\u201d So, even Caesar\u2019s image pointed beyond itself to God\u2019s image, the image in which all of us were created.<\/p>\n

What could possibly belong to then emperor that is not also God\u2019s first? What could possibly be due to one\u2019s nation or country that is not due to God first<\/em>?\u00a0 What could possible be ours <\/em>that is not also God\u2019s first<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Creation Connection:<\/strong><\/p>\n

When we think about \u201cCreation\u201d, we so often turn our attention to flora and fauna, but when was the last time you gave thanks for God\u2019s gift of metal, as was used to create the coin in today\u2019s gospel reading?
