Animbiigoo Zaagi’igan Anishinaabek (AZA) and the Greenstone Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), establishing a partnership to forge new ways of working together in the spirit of reconciliation and to advance the well being of Indigenous residents in urban and rural communities.<\/p>\n
The Memorandum of Understanding reflects a shared commitment by AZA and the Greenstone OPP to continuously establish and maintain a respectful relationship built upon communication, cooperation, understanding and a shared interest in community safety and well being.<\/p>\n
For Animbiigoo Zaagi’igan Anishinaabek, the MOU is particularly significant as the Nation continues the development of Lake Nipigon Reserve as a place for members to live, gather, work and return home. As new homes and community infrastructure are developed, AZA is also working to establish and strengthen the essential services and relationships required to support a safe, healthy and sustainable community.<\/p>\n
The MOU provides an important foundation for AZA and the Greenstone OPP to work together in responding to the evolving needs of the community. It recognizes that effective policing and community safety are strengthened when relationships are established before they are needed and when there is ongoing communication, mutual understanding and respect between the police service, First Nation leadership and the people they serve.<\/p>\n
Chief Yvette Metansinine said the agreement is another important part of building the future of Lake Nipigon Reserve.<\/p>\n
“As our people continue our Journey Home and we build Lake Nipigon Reserve for our children, families and future generations, we must also ensure that the services and relationships needed to support our community grow with us. This Memorandum of Understanding is about more than responding when policing services are required. It is about building a relationship before those moments arise, creating opportunities to better understand one another and finding new ways of working together in the spirit of reconciliation. We want our members, families, employees and visitors to know that their safety and well being matter. A respectful relationship between our Nation and the OPP, grounded in communication, understanding and mutual respect, helps us create that sense of safety. The signing of the MOU provides a framework through which that relationship can continue to grow while advancing the safety and well being of the community.<\/p>\n The signing builds upon the ongoing development of services and partnerships supporting Lake Nipigon Reserve and reflects AZA’s commitment to ensuring that community services develop alongside the Nation’s continued growth.
