A wartime evacuee, he later attended Richmond Grammar, obtained teacher quali\ufb01cations from the University of London (Borough Rd.) and emigrated to Canada in 1956. He taught at a one room school at Biscostasing, Ontario and then obtained a B.A. (Western) and M.Ed. (O.I.S.E.) He worked through progressively larger schools in Principal positions in Northeastern Ontario to his retirement in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>In 1957, he had the good fortune to meet Joan (nee Wyatt) of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. The couple were married for sixty-three years until Joan passed away in 2022. She stood by him through all the ups and downs that life brings. Their children are Stephen, Alison (Jim), and Wesley (Sharla) and grandchildren, Derek (Irina), Joshua and Hunter.<\/p>\n<p>Mike spent forty-three years in Northeastern Ontario and moved to Haliburton and \ufb01nally Bobcaygeon. He joined the Writers Union of Canada and pursued a second career writing \ufb01fty-eight books with special interests in mining and all aspects of Northern Ontario and its history as well as the history of the O.P.P.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1991 he was made an Honorary O.P.P. Inspector. He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada in 1995 due to his being recognized as an authority on the history and folklore of Northern Ontario and his proli\ufb01c writing, speci\ufb01cally for his children\u2019s books. He acted as a stringer for the Globe and Mail and a freelance broadcaster for CBC radio. Michael also was a Presiding O\ufb03cer for Canadian Citizenship Ceremonies. He continued to write, educate and give informative talks at the retirement home where he lived.<\/p>\n<p>He died on August 11, 2026, at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Memorial Donations can be made to Alongside Hope (formerly P.W.R.D.F.) who are partners working for change in Canada and around the world and can be arranged through the Gordon A.
