{"id":84401,"date":"2026-07-06T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T12:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=84401"},"modified":"2026-07-06T06:49:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T10:49:12","slug":"forest-fire-update-july-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/06\/forest-fire-update-july-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Forest Fire Update &#8211; July 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Northeast Region<\/h3>\n<p>Updated: July\u00a05,\u00a02026 at 7:10\u00a0p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (<abbr>EDT<\/abbr>)<\/p>\n<p>Five new wildland fires were confirmed in the Northeast Region today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e866bfc25badeb5d6de8c3d9ac97e442a\"><strong>Cochrane 32\u00a0<\/strong>measures 2.8 hectares. It is located approximately 2 kilometres northwest of Harty. Two CL-415 waterbombers and a lead birddog aircraft were on the scene this afternoon. Two FireRanger crews are responding. A helicopter with belly tank assisted crews on the ground early Sunday evening.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ec73eb7b426ccae788aeff519b08090b5\"><strong>North Bay 16\u00a0<\/strong>measures 0.4 of a hectare west of Yorkston Lake and south of Lady Evelyn Smoothwater Provincial Park. It is not under control.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ef5cee860ceb98507f69f963d037e4cb9\"><strong>Wawa 6\u00a0<\/strong>was confirmed late Sunday afternoon at 0.1 of a hectare. It is located approximately 11 kilometres south of Hawk Junction, west of Highway 101 and Whitefish Lake. It is not under control.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e32dc0cc922c6b5fa5acd32e4c3cfa9c4\"><strong>Wawa 7\u00a0<\/strong>was confirmed late Sunday afternoon at 0.1 of a hectare. It is located east of Jeff Lake, 13 kilometres north of the Montreal River and approximately 30 kilometres east of Lake Superior Provincial Park.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ea2c878edd9e19880fbbc9c584b8120e7\"><strong>Wawa 8<\/strong> was confirmed early evening at 1.1 hectares and is located approximately 4 kilometres east of highway 614, on a peninsula on the southern shore of Musher Lake, and 33 kilometres south of Manitouwadge. One crew is assigned to this fire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are currently 35 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region. Of these: 6 are not under control, 2 are being held, 4 are under control and 23 are being observed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<h3>Northwest Region<\/h3>\n<p>Updated: July 5,\u00a02026 at 18:34\u00a0p.m. \u202fCentral Daylight Time (<abbr>CDT<\/abbr>)<\/p>\n<p>Five new fires were confirmed in the Northwest Region by the early evening of July 5.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e489447e52a281dd54429ebfb07e593af\"><strong>Dryden 21\u00a0(DRY021)<\/strong> is located near the eastern shore of Harmon Lake, approximately 109\u00a0kilometres north of Upsala. The 2.0\u00a0hectare fire is not under control.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e7669e60b599cfe89f58183cb7c6d99e2\"><strong>Thunder Bay 34\u00a0(THU034)<\/strong> is located within the community of Kakabeka Falls. The 0.1\u00a0hectare fire is not under control.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"eaaa0a1eafada8c3fce8fb9de89dc607a\"><strong>Nipigon 26\u00a0(NIP026)<\/strong> is located near Oakley Lake, in a remote area approximately 65\u00a0kilometres west of Neskatanga First Nation. The 250\u00a0hectare fire is being observed.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ea02e49c6362e301b2e85fcce675c8f78\"><strong>Sioux Lookout 59\u00a0(SLK059)<\/strong> is located at the Allanwater Bridge, approximately 38\u00a0kilometres east of Savant Lake. The 0.1\u00a0hectare fire is under control.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e85949faa5e63074cb2645ca2ea04d932\"><strong>Sioux Lookout 58\u00a0(SLK058)<\/strong> is located near the east shore of Kezik Lake, approximately 10\u00a0kilometres north of Slate Falls First Nation. The 4.0\u00a0hectare fire is not under control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the time of this update there are 76\u00a0active fires in the Northwest Region. Of those fires, 16\u00a0are not under control, 2\u00a0fires are being held, 9\u00a0fires are under control and 49\u00a0fires are being observed. Two fires were called out over the past 24\u00a0hours.<\/p>\n<h4>Fires of note<\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Kasabonika Cluster<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e166255d19f55e20473c2afad89666cb4\">A total of 12\u00a0FireRanger crews, 8\u00a0fire management personnel, 3\u00a0helicopters and 2\u00a0fixed wing aircraft are assigned to the Kasabonika Lake First Nation Cluster.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e1b7e4797325b424f0e9653ee1b386116\">Crews are establishing hose lines on the western and northern perimeters of priority-fire <strong>Nipigon 16<\/strong>. Bucketing helicopters supported FireRanger crews as well as supressed flare-ups on Nipigon 13, Sunday.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e2cd2c0355ccfcf14b8777dcd39d66e63\">A drying trend over the past few days has FireRanger crews monitoring for increased fire behaviour and new starts from recent lightning strikes. Smoke may be more visible in the community.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e2b73fec957ac8917bf07d667d541adf8\"><strong>Nipigon 16\u00a0(NIP016) <\/strong>is 1,474.2\u00a0hectares in size. The fire\u2019s status remains not under control.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e04c91245512e22c2ae84d211a2aaf096\"><strong>Nipigon 12\u00a0(NIP012) <\/strong>is located approximately 20\u00a0kilometres west of Kasabonika Lake First Nation and currently measuring 2,119\u00a0hectares.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e11e197421144c56f1464a89619b8fb0e\">There are 3\u00a0additional active fires in the area surrounding Kasabonika Lake First Nation.\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e8ccfdc4719b0df3d4930817e4097ef9c\"><strong>Nipigon 13\u00a0(NIP013) <\/strong>is not under control and has been remapped to 500.4\u00a0hectares<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e47c70fa2f8058b2a4cb48069ea6b3495\"><strong>Nipigon 14\u00a0(NIP014) <\/strong>is not under control at 2\u00a0hectares<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e90425b6769f893f0372bf022077a06b9\"><strong>Nipigon 15\u00a0(NIP015) <\/strong>is not under control at 0.1\u00a0hectares.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NOTAM in place &#8211; Kasabonika Cluster<\/strong><br \/>\nThere is currently a NOTAM in the area of wildland fire Nipigon 16\u00a0near Kasabonika Lake First Nation. This is over and above the standard airspace restrictions imposed by Section 601.15\u00a0of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) which state that the airspace around all active forest fires is restricted to forest fire suppression aircraft only, specifically airspace within 5\u00a0nautical miles, up to an altitude of 3000\u00a0feet above ground level.<br \/>\nPilots are reminded that NOTAMs concerning forest fires can be found on NavCanada\u2019s Collaborative Flight Planning Services under the \u2018Weather and NOTAM\u2019 tab, when flight planning.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Fort Frances 14<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e7198f13d3ad62282d95a88e1c9dd89e1\">2\u00a0heavy helicopters, with increased bucketing capacity, joined fire operations on Sunday.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e3fa8226a531232813a9e7f870598d101\">A drying trend continues in the area and fire operations staff are monitoring for increasing fire behaviour.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e5242093d76d25a531266e1aa01c53efc\">14\u00a0FireRanger crews and 5\u00a0helicopters have been assigned to Fort Frances 14.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e41bb5bca73390e6f841e1431185bc6d3\">The fire is 1,480\u00a0hectares in size and is not under control.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"efc170dac0611e61024a59fa99f5ee629\"><strong>Fort Frances 14\u00a0(FOR014)<\/strong> is located approximately 35\u00a0kilometres southwest of Upsala near Byers Lake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Sioux Lookout 21\u00a0\u2013 Wunnumin Lake First Nation<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e72a216f645768ab168e236555e840082\"><strong>Sioux Lookout 21\u00a0(SLK021) <\/strong>remains 357\u00a0hectares in size and is not under control.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ecd59f0a90b3677af726fb10d5cefe17a\">Crews have established hoseline along the majority of the fire\u2019s northern perimeter.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ea9b09053107481cf082aa44f8ed72cbe\">The fire is approximately 9\u00a0kilometres south of the Wunnumin Lake First Nation Airport.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e4317dc8ff71b53e29ce07e1051909dab\">6\u00a0FireRanger crews and 3\u00a0helicopters are assigned to SLK 021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NOTAM in effect &#8211; Sioux Lookout 21<\/strong><br \/>\nThere is currently a NOTAM in the area of wildland fire Sioux Lookout 21\u00a0fire near Wunnumin Lake First Nation.
