<\/a>In an increasingly divided and uncertain world, Canada\u2019s new government is focused on what we can control. We are building a stronger, more independent, more resilient economy \u2013 an economy built on the solid foundation of strong Canadian industries and workers.<\/p>\nTo that end, Canada\u2019s new government launched the\u00a0Major Projects Office\u00a0(MPO) last year to get major infrastructure projects \u2013 new ports, mines, trade and energy corridors \u2013 built faster. In six months, Canada\u2019s new government has referred 22 projects and transformative strategies to the MPO worth over $126\u00a0billion in investment, including Nouveau Monde Graphite\u2019s (NMG) Matawinie Mine in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n
Today, the Prime Minister, Mark\u00a0Carney, announced that construction is starting on this transformative project just six months after its referral to the Major Projects Office<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>Once completed, the Matawinie Mine project will be the largest graphite mine in North America, and\u00a0in the G7 \u2013 supplying up to 106,000 tonnes annually.\u00a0<\/strong>Graphite is an\u00a0indispensable component for electric vehicle batteries, energy storage systems, advanced manufacturing, and defence and aerospace technologies. With global demand rapidly outpacing supply,\u00a0the Matawinie Mine will help position Canada as the reliable partner of choice for\u00a0Asia, Europe, and beyond.<\/p>\n The Matawinie Mine\u00a0will\u00a0create more than 1,000 new jobs from engineering to the skilled trades, attract nearly $2\u00a0billion in investment into our economy, and support lower emissions.<\/p>\n NMG will integrate the mine with a battery material plant in B\u00e9cancour, Qu\u00e9bec, becoming Canada\u2019s first integrated graphite operation \u2013 from extraction to refinery.\u00a0Both the Matawinie Mine and the processing facilities will operate primarily on Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s low\u2011cost, renewable hydroelectricity, enabling an all\u2011electric production model that significantly lowers greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional graphite supply chains. This integrated, low\u2011carbon approach will reduce reliance on higher\u2011emitting foreign sources.<\/p>\n By building more of the critical minerals value chain here at home, Canada will strengthen our battery and automotive sectors, reduce reliance on concentrated foreign sources of graphite, and position Canada as a reliable supplier of responsibly sourced graphite materials.<\/p>\n To ensure this transformative project was built, the MPO convened four federal departments and agencies to coordinate financing support, commercial arrangements, and permitting and approval processes, and secure offtake agreements for the company \u2013 including federal government stockpiling.
