In mid-October, she was approved for a lung transplant to be performed in Toronto.

This is great news for Carol and her family, but it brings a whole new set of worries and problems to deal with. Carol has to relocate to Toronto. She must live less than 2 hours away from the hospital. That means finding a new place to live immediately and move for an unknown length of time.

Rent in Toronto is very expensive, and most places want first/last and damage deposit. Now add in the fact that you do not know how long you will be staying… Landlords want stable, long-term renters; and that isn’t something that any transplant candidate can promise. This is a problem for many transplant candidates from the North who head to Toronto/London while waiting, and then they are encouraged to stay for an additional 3 months after the transplant has occurred.

The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care does fund a program that gives lung transplant patients who need to relocate $650 a month for accommodations. Just a quick look on the internet for a one bedroom suite, shows rates of $2000+. That leaves a shortfall of $1,350 monthly or $16,200. Then to throw into consideration is the house and expenses she leaves behind. Ouch!

Carol has contributed to the community, and now needs our help back. So the family has begun to fundraise, to support Carol, ease a few of her worries. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched.

This weekend there is a Spaghetti Dinner and Dance at the Legion Hall, Saturday night. Cocktails are at 5 p.m., Dinner is served at 6. There will be games, 50/50 draw and a door prize. Tickets are $15
If you wish to purchase a ticket you can contact Tiffany Jarrell, Alison Kidder or myself.

Nov 17, 2017 @ 16:48 After many years of coping with Chronic COPD (Chronic bronchitis/emphysema), Carol Peters is seeing some light.
