Marie), the site of the historic 1850 Robinson Huron Treaty, and will convene participants for open dialogue, critical reflection, and knowledge-sharing about the intersections of identity, governance, and First Nations rights in Ontario.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis gathering is part of an ongoing effort to protect Anishinaabe sovereignty and ensure that our histories and our ancestors are not misrepresented or misused,\u201d said Earl Commanda, Executive Director of Robinson Huron Waawiindamaagewin. \u201cThe conversations we are facilitating are about truth, about the importance of understanding where these new claims come from, how they\u2019ve been constructed, and why they matter to First Nations.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><b><u>Conference Overview<\/u><\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><b>December 13<\/b>: The conference opens with Breakfast at 8:00 a.m., followed by remarks from MC Anishinabek Nation Lake Huron Regional Chief Scott McLeod at 9:00 a.m.<br \/>\nDay One features four panels exploring the historical formation of the MNO, the gendered and genealogical implications of its \u201cforebearers\u201d narrative, the legal legacy of the Powley decision, and the historical misidentification of \u201cM\u00e9tis\u201d communities in Ontario.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><b>Highlighted Panels Include:<\/b><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The Creation of the MNO: From the 1960s to the 1990s<\/b><br \/>\nModerated by <i>Celeste Pedri-Spade<\/i>\u00a0and <i>Geraldine King<\/i>\u00a0(McGill University), with <i>David Thompson (Anishinabek)<\/i>\u00a0\u2014 examining the early political formations that gave rise to the MNO and their regional contexts.<\/li>\n<li><b>First Nation Women No Longer<\/b><br \/>\nModerated by <i>Deb Pine (Anishinabekwe)<\/i>, featuring <i>Christine Sy (University of Victoria)<\/i>, <i>Kara Louttit (Omushkego-Eeyou Cree)<\/i>, and <i>Zoe Todd (Red River M\u00e9tis, Simon Fraser University)<\/i>\u00a0\u2014 unpacking the MNO\u2019s \u201cforebearers\u201d concept and its implications for First Nations women and sovereignty.<\/li>\n<li><b>Revisiting the Powley Decision<\/b><br \/>\nA critical exploration of the landmark 2003 case recognizing M\u00e9tis harvesting rights, moderated by <i>Stacy Tijerina (Anishinabek)<\/i>\u00a0and featuring <i>Darren O\u2019Toole (University of Ottawa)<\/i>, <i>Heidi Bohaker (University of Toronto)<\/i>, <i>Sara Mainville (Anishinabekwe)<\/i>, and <i>Stephen Mussell (Red River M\u00e9tis)<\/i>.<\/li>\n<li><b>The History of Communities Identified as M\u00e9tis by the MNO<\/b><br \/>\nModerated by <i>Brock Pitawanakwat (York University)<\/i>, this discussion highlights regional research challenging the MNO\u2019s historical claims and the erasure of Anishinabek governance practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><b>December 14:<\/b>\u00a0Day Two continues the conversation with Panel 5: Outlining Opposition to the MNO\u2019s Political Claims, featuring <i>Brock Pitawanakwat<\/i>, <i>Shelly Moore-Frappier<\/i>, <i>Darryl Leroux<\/i>, and <i>Brent Debassige<\/i>.
