{"id":7842,"date":"2017-11-07T08:07:39","date_gmt":"2017-11-07T13:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=7842"},"modified":"2017-11-07T06:11:18","modified_gmt":"2017-11-07T11:11:18","slug":"teamsters-issue-statement-on-failure-of-omnitrax-to-rebuild-the-hudson-bay-railway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/07\/teamsters-issue-statement-on-failure-of-omnitrax-to-rebuild-the-hudson-bay-railway\/","title":{"rendered":"Teamsters issue Statement on failure of OmniTRAX to rebuild the Hudson Bay Railway"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"row\">\n<p><b>Nov 7, 2017 @ 08:07<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1\">\n<p>The following is a statement from <span class=\"xn-person\">Roland Hackl<\/span>, Vice-President of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC), regarding the unprecedented challenges with rail operations on the Hudson Bay Railway (HBR):<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Our members are proud, contributing members of the communities in <span class=\"xn-location\">The Pas<\/span> and Gilliam and they have been decimated by the failure of OmniTRAX (HBR&#8217;s parent company) to rebuild the railway as directed by the Federal Government.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>This line has been in operation for decades with the HBR and with CN before that, it is the lifeline for <span class=\"xn-location\">Northern Manitoba<\/span> bringing food, heating fuel and essentials to northern communities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>A railway is not just a business, it&#8217;s a responsibility.\u00a0The communities they serve, the employees that work there, and their families are all dependent on this link. Employers always say they are an essential service and limit the union&#8217;s ability to bargain with them, but faced with the costs of maintaining infrastructure, this employer has effectively shut down almost all railway operations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Trucking product and materials that were previously handled by train will further deteriorate an already burdened highway system.\u00a0The railway is the most efficient way to move product, and there are communities, like <span class=\"xn-location\">Churchill<\/span>, that don&#8217;t currently have highway access.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>It is shameful that this company was allowed to buy the property from CN, get provincial and federal subsidies for the last twenty years and then basically walk away following the flooding, something that any railway is subject to.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Teamsters represent 125,000 members in <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> in all industries, including 12,000 workers in the rail industry.
