This legislation enables the government to streamline federal approval processes to get major projects built faster.\u00a0These projects will better connect\u00a0our economy, diversify our industries, access new markets, and create high-paying careers, while protecting Canada\u2019s\u00a0rigorous environmental standards\u00a0and upholding the rights of Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n<p>In August,\u00a0Prime Minister Carney launched the\u00a0new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/major-projects-office\">Major Projects Office<\/a>\u00a0(MPO) to spearhead this mission. Headquartered in\u00a0Calgary,\u00a0its\u00a0mandate is clear: to serve as a single point of contact that gets major, transformative projects built, faster. It will do so in two principal ways: by streamlining and accelerating regulatory\u00a0approvals, and by structuring and coordinating financing where needed. Canada\u2019s new government will soon announce the first tranche of nation-building projects to be advanced to the MPO for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>This Major Projects Office will benefit from the leadership and guidance of the Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC) \u2013 eleven representatives from First Nations, Inuit, M\u00e9tis, and Modern Treaty and Self-Governing communities. These leaders bring deep expertise and experience, and they will help guide the MPO\u2019s work to ensure that major projects create opportunities for equity ownership and responsible resource management through meaningful participation with Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the Prime Minister announced the official appointments of its members:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kluane Adamek, Kluane First Nation, Yukon<\/li>\n<li>Chief Darcy Bear, Whitecap Dakota First Nation, Saskatchewan<\/li>\n<li>Vanessa Doig, Makivvik, Nunavik, Northern\u00a0Qu\u00e9bec<\/li>\n<li>JP\u00a0Gladu, Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek, Ontario<\/li>\n<li>Victoria LaBillois, Listuguj Mi\u2019gmaq First Nation, Qu\u00e9bec<\/li>\n<li>Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi, Beaver First Nation (Treaty\u00a08), Alberta<\/li>\n<li>Chief Terry Paul, Membertou First Nation, Nova Scotia<\/li>\n<li>Lorne Pelletier,\u00a0Manitoba M\u00e9tis Federation, Manitoba<\/li>\n<li>Christy Sinclair, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., Nunavut<\/li>\n<li>Crystal Smith, Haisla Nation, British Columbia<\/li>\n<li>Matt Vermette, M\u00e9tis Nation-Saskatchewan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meaningful consultation with Indigenous Peoples is embedded in the <em>Building Canada Act<\/em>, both in the process of determining which projects are in our collective interest and in the development of the conditions for those projects going forward. This law honours Section\u00a035 of our Constitution and the duty to consult, and upholds the\u00a0government\u2019s commitment to\u00a0implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, including free, prior, and informed consent.<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, Canada\u2019s new government held three summits to engage First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis leadership on this new law \u2013 listening to their priorities and exploring opportunities for equity ownership and broader economic benefits from this generational transformation in the Canadian economy.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s new government is moving at a pace not seen in generations to get big things built in true partnership with Indigenous\u00a0Peoples. They will meet a minimum of four times a year in-person, with other virtual meetings held as required. The IAC will be supported secretarially by the Major Projects Office (MPO).<\/li>\n<li>The MPO was enabled through the\u00a0<em>Building Canada Act<\/em>, which came into force in June 2025.\u00a0It was launched on August 29, 2025,\u00a0to get nation-building projects built.
