{"id":7615,"date":"2017-10-31T15:11:37","date_gmt":"2017-10-31T19:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=7615"},"modified":"2017-10-31T15:16:57","modified_gmt":"2017-10-31T19:16:57","slug":"fair-wage-bill-would-complicate-public-safety-emergency-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2017\/10\/31\/fair-wage-bill-would-complicate-public-safety-emergency-response\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Fair Wage&#8221; Bill Would Complicate Public Safety, Emergency Response"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1\">\n<p><b>Oct 31, 2017 @ 15:11<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<p>Association of Municipalities of Ontario President <span class=\"xn-person\">Lynn Dollin<\/span> was at Queen&#8217;s Park today advocating for changes that would ensure effective and affordable public safety\/emergency response.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We depend on on-call and stand-by workers to step in during major storms, disasters, and other emergencies,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Lynn Dollin<\/span>, AMO President. &#8220;Collective agreements are negotiated to reflect these unique roles, and ensure fair compensation and treatment for these important workers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1\">\n<p>Dollin is seeking amendments to fix the unintended consequences of Bill 148, the <i>Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act.\u00a0<\/i>For example, the bill would require matching pay for full-time and stand-by workers, and additional payments for on-call work, even volunteer firefighters. Volunteer firefighters are on a &#8220;call list&#8221; rather than being on-call. They choose to respond to a call and are only paid for the hours that they work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Province agrees that municipal governments weren&#8217;t the intended target of this bill. In fact, municipal governments are employers of choice within their communities,&#8221; Dollin said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Municipal governments have been tallying the costs of the Bill 148&#8217;s requirements. For some small and large urban municipalities, the costs are upwards of <span class=\"xn-money\">$1 to $2 million<\/span> per year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Across <span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario<\/span> municipal costs are already rising at about <span class=\"xn-money\">$1 billion<\/span> per year, often driven by provincial laws and this is a textbook example,&#8221; Dollin added. &#8220;If they don&#8217;t amend the bill, municipalities will be forced to either greatly increase property taxes, reduce local services \u2013 or both.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>AMO is a non-profit organization representing almost all of <span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario&#8217;s<\/span> 444 municipal governments.
