It still leaves much of that income untaxed\u2014but closed a loophole that let the ultra-rich pay lower tax rates than working people.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Carney and Poilievre want to scrap that fix\u2014creating a $19 billion hole in the federal budget, according to budget estimates. In Ontario alone, it would cost over $1.5 billion\u2014money that could fund hospitals, schools, and housing.<\/p>\n<p>Capital gains are profits from investments\u2014like stocks or real estate\u2014not wages. Yet for decades, only half of that income was taxed, while every dollar from your paycheque was. That means the wealthier you are, the more likely you pay a lower tax rate than someone who works for a living.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanadians are already being squeezed by rising prices and Trump\u2019s attacks on our economy,\u201d said Singh. \u201cWe can\u2019t afford another round of giveaways to the people who are doing just fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Singh confirmed New Democrats will protect that revenue\u2014and reinvest it where it counts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Universal pharmacare,\u00a0<\/strong>starting with essential medicines<\/li>\n<li><strong>A family doctor for every Canadian and more nurses and health care workers<\/strong>, to fix health care and reduce wait times<\/li>\n<li><strong>National rent control\u00a0<\/strong>to bring down housing costs<\/li>\n<li><strong>Building millions of new homes<\/strong>\u00a0people can afford<\/li>\n<li><strong>A grocery price cap<\/strong>, to stop price gouging by corporate grocery chains<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even Carney\u2019s future cabinet ministers once defended this tax change. Chrystia Freeland called it \u201can idea that everyone who cares about fairness should support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey stood in Parliament and said the richest should pay their share so we can protect health care and build housing. Now they\u2019re backing down the moment the ultra-rich push back\u2014and the Liberals under Carney are falling in line,\u201d said Singh.<\/p>\n<p>While Poilievre pushes American-style cuts and chaos, Carney is quietly walking away from his party\u2019s own commitments\u2014planning $43 billion in cuts to the services families rely on, while reopening the door to more tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t complicated,\u201d said Singh. \u201cIf you think the richest Canadians should keep paying less while you pay more, vote for them.
