In the face of unimaginable hardship, Ukrainians have persevered and have fought for freedom and democracy. <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> has supported and will continue to support <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> in achieving just and lasting peace.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister, <span class=\"xn-person\">Justin Trudeau<\/span>, visited <span class=\"xn-location\">Kyiv<\/span> today to reaffirm <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada&#8217;s<\/span> unwavering support for <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>During this visit, the Prime Minister highlighted the recent conclusion of negotiations between <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> on the terms of <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada&#8217;s<\/span> $5\u00a0billion contribution to the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) Loans mechanism. <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> will disburse the first half of its contribution, totalling <span class=\"xn-money\">$2<\/span>.5\u00a0billion, in the coming days, with the remainder to follow soon. Announced last year at the G7 Summit in <span class=\"xn-location\">Apulia<\/span>, Italy,\u00a0the ERA Loans will bring forward the future revenues from frozen Russian sovereign assets. This initiative will provide <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> with approximately $69\u00a0billion\u00a0(US$50\u00a0billion).<\/p>\n<p>To maintain pressure on <span class=\"xn-location\">Russia<\/span>, Prime Minister Trudeau announced new sanctions targeting 76 individuals and entities providing support for the Kremlin&#8217;s military industrial base, involved in the\u00a0unlawful deportation or forced transfer of Ukrainian children, or supporting the Kremlin&#8217;s information operations capabilities, as well as senior Russian government officials and oligarchs who support Putin&#8217;s regime. In total, <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> has sanctioned more than 3,000 individuals and entities who are complicit in the violation of <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine&#8217;s<\/span> sovereignty and territorial integrity and in gross and systematic human rights violations. The Prime Minister also announced that\u00a0Canada is taking action against <span class=\"xn-location\">Russia&#8217;s<\/span> shadow fleet by sanctioning 109 vessels based on their involvement in the transfer of sanctioned goods, including hydrocarbons whose revenue fuels <span class=\"xn-location\">Russia&#8217;s<\/span> war machine.<\/p>\n<p>In response to <span class=\"xn-location\">Russia&#8217;s<\/span> renewed attacks on <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine&#8217;s<\/span> energy infrastructure, which have left millions of civilians deprived of electricity, water, and heat, the Prime Minister also announced a $50\u00a0million contribution to help support <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine&#8217;s<\/span> urgent efforts to repair and replace damaged energy equipment and critical infrastructure, in partnership with the Energy Community Secretariat. This builds on the $20\u00a0million in funding <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> announced last year in support of this initiative at the Summit on Peace in <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span>, in Lucerne, <span class=\"xn-location\">Switzerland<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>During a bilateral meeting with the President of <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/span>, Prime Minister Trudeau noted progress on <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada&#8217;s<\/span> assistance commitments, including the delivery of military training and critical equipment, such as armoured combat vehicles and infantry fighting vehicles, ammunition, and F-16 landing systems and simulators.<\/p>\n<p>Building on the <span class=\"xn-money\">$3<\/span>.02\u00a0billion announced in the Agreement on Security Cooperation between <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> last year, the Prime Minister announced that $40\u00a0million of the total <span class=\"xn-money\">$3<\/span>.02\u00a0billion in funding will be allocated to deliver urgently needed capabilities to the Armed Forces of <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> through the Danish Model and another $15\u00a0million toward supporting Canadian companies seeking to operate and invest in <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine&#8217;s<\/span> defence sector.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister announced new assistance measures for <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> totalling <span class=\"xn-money\">$118.5 million<\/span>, including:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span class=\"xn-money\">$92<\/span>.3\u00a0million in development assistance to strengthen local community building, support small-scale livelihood recovery projects that address community needs, reduce poverty and\u00a0break down barriers to women&#8217;s full participation,\u00a0address food security issues, and support the return of deported children and missing persons by\u00a0improving the resilience of <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine&#8217;s<\/span> government, communities, civil society, and private sector.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-money\">$14 million<\/span> in humanitarian assistance, including for the provision of food, shelter, water, sanitation, hygiene services, and mental health and psycho-social support to those in need.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-money\">$8 million<\/span> for weapons threat reduction to provide critical personal protective equipment to Ukrainians facing chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats, and to strengthen nuclear security in the country.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-money\">$4<\/span>.25\u00a0million to support peace and stabilization operations, including assisting regional women&#8217;s rights organizations and ensuring representatives from civil society and media can work safely.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-money\">$82,000<\/span> for local initiatives that will support the physical and mental health of former Ukrainian prisoners of war.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In total, <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> has committed over <span class=\"xn-money\">$19<\/span>.7\u00a0billion in multifaceted assistance for <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> since the beginning of <span class=\"xn-location\">Russia&#8217;s<\/span> full-scale invasion in <span class=\"xn-chron\">February 2022<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In <span class=\"xn-location\">Kyiv<\/span>, Prime Minister Trudeau joined President Zelenskyy and international partners to discuss the situation on the ground as well as <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine&#8217;s<\/span> needs for military, financial, humanitarian, recovery, and other assistance. During a plenary session on the theme of &#8220;Defence and Security Strategy of Unity: Action Plan&#8221;, he delivered remarks commending the Ukrainian people for their bravery and resilience in the face of unjustified and brutal violence. He reaffirmed <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada&#8217;s<\/span> position as an unshakeable ally who will continue to work with partners around the world to provide <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> with security and defence support \u2013 allowing it to recover, rebuild, and prosper.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister also convened his G7 counterparts and President Zelenskyy for a hybrid meeting to further discuss support for Ukraine.\u00a0He underlined the importance of G7 unity in supporting a just and lasting peace in <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> as well as <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine&#8217;s<\/span> reconstruction and economic recovery, noting that these would be priorities for <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> throughout our G7 Presidency this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister also attended a candle-lighting ceremony where he paid tribute to all those whose lives have been lost since the start of <span class=\"xn-location\">Russia&#8217;s<\/span> aggression. Throughout his visit, he reiterated that Canada\u00a0will always stand with Ukrainians as they continue to fight for freedom, justice, and democracy. We will defend a future for <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> that&#8217;s written by Ukrainians. We will defend a <span class=\"xn-location\">Ukraine<\/span> that is strong and free.
