{"id":69687,"date":"2024-10-17T13:29:59","date_gmt":"2024-10-17T17:29:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=69687"},"modified":"2024-10-17T14:03:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-17T18:03:56","slug":"opp-11-deaths-made-for-a-tragic-thanksgiving-long-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2024\/10\/17\/opp-11-deaths-made-for-a-tragic-thanksgiving-long-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"OPP &#8211; 11 Deaths Made for a Tragic Thanksgiving Long Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/OPPCrest-e1501592123859.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-101\" src=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/OPPCrest-e1501592123859-300x236.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a>Seven vehicle occupants, a pedestrian and three off-road vehicle riders were killed in Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) jurisdictions, making for a particularly tragic Thanksgiving long weekend on and off the road.<\/p>\n<p>Over and above the fatalities, the safety of road users was jeopardized by thousands of unsafe drivers during one of the busiest weekends of the year on highways and roads.<\/p>\n<p>While the OPP took part in the annual <em>Operation Impact<\/em> campaign, aggressive drivers posed the most significant risk on roads, with officers laying<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4,902 speeding charges,<\/li>\n<li>133 stunt\/racing charges,<\/li>\n<li>388 seatbelt law violations,<\/li>\n<li>163 impaired drivers were cha<em>rged under the <\/em><em>Criminal Code<\/em> charges, and<\/li>\n<li>85 fines were issued for distracted driving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In total, the OPP laid <strong>8,870<\/strong> traffic-related charges throughout Ontario over the four-day campaign (October 11-14, 2024).<\/p>\n<p>The motoring public is reminded that complying with all traffic laws can go a long way towards preventing collisions, injuries and fatalities on and off the road.<\/p>\n<p><em>Operation Impact<\/em> is led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, under the leadership of its Traffic Safety Committee, in support of Canada&#8217;s Road Safety Strategy 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seven vehicle occupants, a pedestrian and three off-road vehicle riders were killed in Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) jurisdictions, making for a particularly tragic Thanksgiving long weekend on and off the road.
