Over 300 young chess masters will meet in Wawa on Thursday, May 23, for the eighth Franco-Nord-Ouest Chess Tournament. The competition, hosted by Wawa\u2019s \u00c9cole Saint-Joseph, will attract francophone students from the following elementary and secondary schools: \u00c9cole Ste-Marie (Azilda), \u00c9cole Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur (Chapleau), \u00c9SC Trillium (Chapleau), \u00c9cole Alliance St-Joseph (Chelmsford), \u00c9cole St-Joseph (Dubreuilville), \u00c9cole La Renaissance (Espanola), \u00c9cole Notre-Dame (Hamner), \u00c9cole Saint Nom de J\u00e9sus (Hornepayne), \u00c9cole St-Paul (Lively), \u00c9cole Notre-Dame-du-Sault (Sault-Ste-Marie), \u00c9cole \u00c9cho-des-Rapides (Sault-Ste-Marie), \u00c9S Notre-Dame-du-Sault (Sault-Ste-Marie), \u00c9cole St-Charles Borrom\u00e9e (St-Charles), \u00c9cole St-Denis (Sudbury), \u00c9cole Ste-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se (Val Th\u00e9r\u00e8se), \u00c9cole St-Thomas (Warren), \u00c9SC de La V\u00e9rendrye (Thunder Bay), \u00c9cole l\u2019Escalade (Wawa), \u00c9cole Saint-Joseph (Wawa) et \u00c9S Saint-Joseph (Wawa). This year, students from 20 French-language Catholic and public schools are taking part in this competition.<\/p>\n

The tournament will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre (3 Chris Simon Drive, Wawa). All participants will be entitled to five games. Competing players will be divided in four categories: grades 3 and 4, grades 5 and 6, grades 7 and 8, and grades 9 to 12. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams and top students in each category.<\/p>\n

Students from Wawa\u2019s \u00c9cole Saint-Joseph have acquired a reputation for their passion for chess, a discipline that requires considerable strategizing in addition to memory and problem-solving skills.
