{"id":5845,"date":"2017-08-23T09:42:32","date_gmt":"2017-08-23T13:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=5845"},"modified":"2017-08-23T09:42:32","modified_gmt":"2017-08-23T13:42:32","slug":"conservatives-wynnes-liberals-block-vacation-days-and-sick-leave-for-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2017\/08\/23\/conservatives-wynnes-liberals-block-vacation-days-and-sick-leave-for-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservatives, Wynne\u2019s Liberals block vacation days and sick leave for workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wynne\u2019s Liberals and the Conservatives joined together this week, refusing to support the NDP\u2019s labour proposals that would give Ontarians more stability, more vacation time and access to paid sick days when they need them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know the Conservatives aren\u2019t on the side of working Ontarians,\u201d said Horwath. \u201cAnd Wynne\u2019s Liberals joined those Conservatives in refusing to support better conditions for everyday Ontarians working for a living.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWork is less stable in Ontario. Jobs don\u2019t last a lifetime like they used to, and one in three working in Ontario don\u2019t have even basic benefits. I want Ontaians to have more respect, more work-life balance and more opportunity to protect their health and mental health \u2013 and it can be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The NDP changes were tabled as amendments to Bill 148. Among those that the Conservatives and Liberals refused to support, blocking their passage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vacation<\/strong>: The NDP called for everyone to have three weeks of annual vacation instead of two.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sick days<\/strong>: The NDP called for all workers to have five paid sick or emergency leave days per year, if they need them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>More stable work<\/strong>: The NDP called for a definition to be added to make it harder for corporations to consider long-time workers \u201ccontractors\u201d instead of employees.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Minimum wage<\/strong>: The NDP called for minimum wage to be the minimum for everyone, instead of continuing to allow staff like restaurant servers be paid much less.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Conservative Leader Patrick Brown has long opposed improvements for working Ontarians. He voted for the anti-labour bill C-377 while he was a Harper MP, and voted for so-called right-to-work legislation \u2013 an attack on unionized workers. He stood alongside Tim Hudak when their party announced the Ontario Conservative plan to cut 100,000 jobs, and his latest move is to fight against raising the minimum wage to $15.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came so close, this week, to a healthier number of vacation days, paid sick days and more stability for those in unstable jobs,\u201d said Horwath. \u201cI\u2019m disappointed that Wynne and the Conservatives don\u2019t support those things, but I won\u2019t give up on these commitments.
