{"id":5530,"date":"2017-08-08T09:24:32","date_gmt":"2017-08-08T13:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=5530"},"modified":"2017-08-08T09:27:19","modified_gmt":"2017-08-08T13:27:19","slug":"wages-dropping-while-costs-and-unemployment-rise-in-ontario","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2017\/08\/08\/wages-dropping-while-costs-and-unemployment-rise-in-ontario\/","title":{"rendered":"Wages dropping while costs and unemployment rise in Ontario"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Aug 8, 2017 @ 09:24<\/b><\/p>\n<p>New data shows that wages for Ontarians are dropping while the cost of living goes up, with full-time working women and young workers taking the hardest hit on their paycheques.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Statistics Canada\u2019s Labour Force Survey for July, the median weekly wage in Ontario was down $15.20 compared to the month before, a decline nearly double the decline seen nationally.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hardest hit were young workers, whose median weekly wages were cut $40 per week in July; and full-time working women, whose median weekly wages were down $24.80 compared to a month earlier.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s harder to get by under the Wynne Liberals,\u201d said NDP Employment critic Catherine Fife. \u201cCosts like hydro bills have been rising fast, but people\u2019s wages are lagging. That\u2019s leaving families feeling squeezed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWynne doesn\u2019t get what everyday families are dealing with \u2013 like bills that are getting harder and harder to pay while workers face stagnant or dropping wages and less stability at work,\u201d said Fife. \u201cToo many families are at a tipping point. We can\u2019t let Wynne do any more damage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the Conservative leader is certainly not the answer \u2013 he actually wants to keep minimum wage low. For his nine years as an MP in the Harper government, he voted against workers\u2019 interests, and he\u2019s still doing it by opposing wage increases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The NDP and Leader Andrea Horwath began pushing for a $15 minimum wage in April 2016, and are fighting for better working conditions for all workers.
