On May 9, 2022, at approximately 7:45 a.m. the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a death related occurrence at Scott Road and Pearson Drive in Elliot Lake.<\/p>\n

The complainant reported locating a deceased male laying outside a pick-up truck in the dirt portion of the intersection off the roadway.\u00a0Police immediately closed off the area in order to conduct their investigation.\u00a0An 80 year-old male was confirmed deceased.\u00a0There is no foul play suspected at this time.<\/p>\n

The East Algoma crime unit and the OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS) assisted with the investigation.\u00a0The investigation is ongoing under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS).<\/p>\n

A post mortem examination is expected to take place in Sault Ste. Marie at a later time.<\/p>\n

On May 9, 2022, shortly after 2:00 a.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a disturbance where a person was choked at an apartment complex on West Street in the Town of Blind River.<\/p>\n

Police attended the apartment and knocked on the door.\u00a0They were confronted by a person that was intoxicated by drug that had pulled a knife on the officers.\u00a0The individual would not co-operate or comply with any directions given by officers.\u00a0In consequence, police utilized the taser to safely and effectively carry out an arrest.<\/p>\n

The individual was taken to hospital and later released into police custody.<\/p>\n

As a result, Austin MERCIECA, 20 years-of-age, from Blind River, was charged with:<\/p>\n

Assault A Peace Officer with a Weapon, contrary to section 270.01(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC) (three counts)
\nAssault Cause Bodily Harm-Choke, Suffocate or Strangle, contrary to section 267(c) of the CC
\nAssault, contrary to section 266 of the CC
\nFail to Comply with Probation Order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC
\nThe accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on June 2, 2022<\/p>\n

The East Algoma (Elliot Lake) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want to advise residents of Elliot Lake that Pearson Drive is now open.<\/p>\n

The East Algoma (Elliot Lake) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want to advise residents of Elliot Lake that Pearson Drive from the dog park to Esten Drive North is presently closed due to an investigation.<\/p>\n

Estimated time of closure will be approximately for five to six hours.<\/p>\n

There is no concern for public safety.<\/p>\n
