Queen\u2019s Park – MPP Michael Mantha (Algoma-Manitoulin) responded to the Ford government\u2019s announcement of support for addictions services in Espanola and Sagamok First Nation. He released the following statement:<\/p>\n
\u201cCongratulations to community members who have been fighting for mental health investment for years.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t all that\u2019s needed, but it\u2019s a small victory for mental health in these communities.\u00a0 It\u2019s imperative that the province work with community partners to address the specific needs of the community to respond to the opioid epidemic in the region. It should not have taken the Ford government four years to provide some support for families and individuals struggling with mental health and addiction,\u201d said Mantha.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, many have died from opioid overdoses in Algoma-Manitoulin. In 2020, Public Health Sudbury and Districts announced 106 deaths, 61 hospitalizations and 520 emergency department admissions due to an overdose.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have risen in the Legislature and written to the government many times on the urgent need for crisis supports and addiction treatment centres in northern communities and in First Nations.\u00a0 People across Algoma-Manitoulin deserve access to mental health and addictions services.
