{"id":51197,"date":"2022-01-20T13:55:51","date_gmt":"2022-01-20T18:55:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=51197"},"modified":"2022-01-20T13:55:51","modified_gmt":"2022-01-20T18:55:51","slug":"east-algoma-opp-many-schemes-to-defraud-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2022\/01\/20\/east-algoma-opp-many-schemes-to-defraud-you\/","title":{"rendered":"East Algoma OPP &#8211; Many Schemes to Defraud You!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind the public that there are many schemes being used to defraud the public and businesses.\u00a0If you receive any unsolicited communication by any means asking for money to be given or that you won money, be cautious and suspicious.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NEVER give out any personal, credit or banking information to anyone over the phone, by letter, email, fax or any other means of communication.<\/li>\n<li>NEVER provide anyone your Social Insurance Number (SIN) over the phone.<\/li>\n<li>Often, the victims are presented with a situation that is either very serious and\/or needs immediate attention and they feel pressured to provide the information requested on the spot. The scammer may also know limited information about you, such as name, address, and possibly a few numbers of a credit card.\u00a0They use this information as a way to convince you they are who they say they are.\u00a0When in reality, they are trying to get you to provide additional personal information.\u00a0These are tactics frequently used in the scams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Here are just a few current examples:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Bank Account Scam<\/em> &#8211; Text messages and\/or emails from financial institutions asking you to click on a link to verify your account information.\u00a0DO NOT click on the link.<\/li>\n<li><em>Romance Scam<\/em> &#8211; scammers target vulnerable people who may be lonely and gain trust by creating a fictitious relationship.\u00a0After time, they request money be sent to them for various reasons; sickness in family and can&#8217;t afford medication, surgery, airline ticket so you can finally meet, housing\/rent money, etc.\u00a0That person you are communicating with is NOT who they say they are.<\/li>\n<li><em>VIN Number Scam<\/em> &#8211; scammers will send you a reply to a motorized vehicle you are selling.\u00a0This has been popular on Kijiji.\u00a0They want to make sure there are no liens on the vehicle before purchasing.\u00a0So, a link is sent to input the VIN\u00a0(<em>Vehicle Identification Number<\/em>) into a website they provide.\u00a0DO NOT click on the link or input your VIN into the website.\u00a0That VIN number provides the scammer your personal information &#8211; name, date of birth, address, etc.<\/li>\n<li><em>Overpayment Scam<\/em> &#8211; The scammer agrees to purchase something you are selling on-line.\u00a0They send you a bank draft or cheque for more than your asking price.\u00a0They ask you to deposit the draft or cheque and pay them back the difference.\u00a0They are hoping you do this before your bank realizes the draft or cheque are fake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, any legitimate agency will <strong><em><u>NEVER<\/u> <\/em><\/strong>request a payment by wire transfer, online currency such as bitcoin, pre-paid credit cards or pre-paid gift cards such as Google Play, iTunes, Vanilla, etc.\u00a0Scammers will ask to purchase large denomination gift cards as form of payment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Awareness is key when it comes to recognizing frauds and scams.\u00a0There are so many types out there but the better educated the public are, the less chance they have to fall victim to these ruthless scammers.\u00a0Don&#8217;t keep it a secret &#8211; talk to a friend, family member, neighbour, or police before making any decisions to send money to people you don&#8217;t know&#8221;, says OPP Community Safety Officer Phil Young.<\/p>\n<p>If you believe that someone is posing as a fraudster on the phone, hang up. \u00a0Also, you can file a complaint through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.\u00a0If you are a victim of a fraud or scam, contact your local police agency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind the public that there are many schemes being used to defraud the public and businesses.\u00a0If you receive any unsolicited communication by any means asking for money to be given or that you won money, be cautious and suspicious. &nbsp;
