Filmmaker Bill Mason immortalized the children’s book Paddle to the Sea with his Canadian National Film Board film in 1966, and was nominated for\u00a0Best Short Film for the\u00a01968 Academy Awards.<\/p>\n
The film is of a wooden canoeist, nicknamed “Paddle,” that had been carved and launched by a young boy in Nipigon, and its journey through the Great Lakes and down the St. Lawrence to the sea.<\/p>\n
If you watch carefully you may recognize some of the locations, a staged forest fire at Meech Lake, Horseshoe Falls, and the polluted waters near Marathon.<\/p>\n
Bill’s daughter, Becky, and her husband, Reid, are\u00a0celebrating the 50th anniversary of this beloved, Oscar-nominated film’s debut. You will have the opportunity to hear stories of how it was shot, and of course, view the extraordinary film in its entirety.<\/p>\n
