Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP, Carol Hughes memorialized two political titans from Manitoulin Island who died within weeks of each other and contributed to their communities while leaving their mark beyond the island\u2019s boundaries.<\/p>\n
\u201cEarlier this month, the Township of Billings lost legendary municipal leader, Austin Hunt.\u00a0 From his earliest days as Lester B. Pearson\u2019s driver to a 65-year municipal career that saw him retire as the longest serving politician in Canada, Austin was a force,\u201d said Hughes. \u201cHis vision for municipal politics resonated throughout the north including his work as a charter member of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then, last week, Anishinabek Nation Head, Gordon Waindubence began his journey into the Spirit World,\u201d said Hughes. \u201cA resident of Sheguindah FN, Gordon worked to unite the Anishinabek Nation and preserve the culture and language.\u00a0 He sought to bring back the traditional clan system and create an Anishinaabe constitution in order to strengthen the traditional governance structure. Anishinabek Grand Chief, Reg Niganobe said Gord\u2019s teachings and kindness will continue to be shared well into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
