{"id":45268,"date":"2021-06-09T08:03:59","date_gmt":"2021-06-09T12:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=45268"},"modified":"2021-06-08T08:44:21","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T12:44:21","slug":"wavs-business-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/09\/wavs-business-scams\/","title":{"rendered":"WAVS &#8211; Business Scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Competition Bureau of Canada has published the <em><u>The Little Black Book of Scams 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Edition<\/u><\/em> and it is available online at <em>https:\/\/www.competitionbureau.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/cb-bc.nsf\/eng\/04333.htm<\/em><em>. <\/em>The information is invaluable and should be of interest to virtually everyone.\u00a0 Over the next few months we will be publishing the information from the <em><u>The Little Black Book of Scams 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Edition, <\/u><\/em>one scam at a time.<em><u>\u00a0 <\/u><\/em>\u00a0Last week we published Door to Door Scams.\u00a0 Today the topic is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Business Scams<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stay up to date on the schemes targeting businesses!<\/p>\n<p>Organizations of any size can still be duped by clever frauds, so make sure you know about them.\u00a0 A typical one is the directory fraud.\u00a0 A fraudster sends your company a proposal for a listing or advertisement in a magazine, journal or business directory, or an online directory.\u00a0 They\u2019ll call to confirm the address and other details.\u00a0 Then the accounting department will receive and pay the bill, unaware that your company never actually order or authorized the service.\u00a0 Another company fraud is the health and safety products scam.\u00a0 You might receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the provincial government, telling you that your first-aid kits need to be replaced or you have to update your company\u2019s health and safety training.\u00a0 In both cases, you may be told to act quickly.\u00a0 One other possible scam is the office supply scam, which involves you receiving and being charged for items you didn\u2019t order.\u00a0 In many cases, scammers will hound you to pay the amount they claim you owe.\u00a0 They will even trick you into believing that they will report you to a collection agency.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips to protect yourself:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Educate yourself, your employees and your co-workers to be cautious of unsolicited calls.<\/li>\n<li>Create a list of companies that are typically used by your business.<\/li>\n<li>Limit the number of staff who can approve purchases and pay bills.<\/li>\n<li>Clearly define procedures for verification, payment and management of accounts and invoices.<\/li>\n<li>Contact your province\u2019s regulator to know your legal obligations.<\/li>\n<li>Fraudsters will use company names or logos similar to those of known businesses to make their invoices seem real.
