{"id":44968,"date":"2021-05-26T08:12:02","date_gmt":"2021-05-26T12:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=44968"},"modified":"2021-05-26T08:13:19","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T12:13:19","slug":"wavs-emergency-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/26\/wavs-emergency-scams\/","title":{"rendered":"WAVS &#8211; Emergency Scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Competition Bureau of Canada has published the <em><u>The Little Black Book of Scams 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Edition<\/u><\/em> and it is available online at <em>https:\/\/www.competitionbureau.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/cb-bc.nsf\/eng\/04333.htm<\/em><em>. <\/em>The information is invaluable and should be of interest to virtually everyone.\u00a0 Over the next few months we will be publishing the information from the <em><u>The Little Black Book of Scams 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Edition, <\/u><\/em>one scam at a time.<em><u>\u00a0 <\/u><\/em>\u00a0Last week we published Phishing and Smishing Scams.\u00a0 Today the topic is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emergency Scams<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Caring grandparents, don\u2019t act too quickly!<\/p>\n<p>Emergency frauds usually target loving grandparents, taking advantage of their emotions to rob them of their money.\u00a0 The typical scam starts with a grandparent receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be their grandchild.\u00a0 The \u2018grandchild\u2019 goes on to say that they\u2019re in trouble \u2013 common misfortunes include having been in a car accident, getting locked up in jail, or trouble returning home from a foreign country \u2013 and they need money immediately.\u00a0 The caller will ask questions, getting you to reveal personal information.\u00a0 They\u2019ll also swear you to secrecy, saying they are embarrassed and don\u2019t want other family members to find out what\u2019s happened.\u00a0 One variation of this ploy features two people on the phone, one pretending to be a grandchild and the other a police officer or lawyer.\u00a0 In other cases, the scammer will pretend to be an old neighbour or a family friend in trouble.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips to protect yourself:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take time to verify the story.
