{"id":44410,"date":"2021-05-06T13:16:28","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T17:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=44410"},"modified":"2021-05-06T13:16:28","modified_gmt":"2021-05-06T17:16:28","slug":"the-past-is-present-as-young-descendants-of-1850-metis-petition-witness-historic-signing-in-sault-ste-marie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/06\/the-past-is-present-as-young-descendants-of-1850-metis-petition-witness-historic-signing-in-sault-ste-marie\/","title":{"rendered":"The past is present as young descendants of 1850 M\u00e9tis Petition witness historic signing in Sault Ste Marie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four young M\u00e9tis people had the opportunity to witness history during a virtual signing ceremony on May 4, 2021 as the local leadership of the Huron-Superior Regional M\u00e9tis Community signed a Regional Implementation Agreement (RIA) with the M\u00e9tis Nation of Ontario (MNO).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rayden Powley-Mortari, Memphis Powley and Morgan and Eizak Jensen acted as &#8220;honourary witnesses&#8221; to the signing. The four are all descendants of M\u00e9tis signatories to an 1850 Petition that sought to protect M\u00e9tis lands at Sault Ste. Marie. For the regional Huron-Superior M\u00e9tis community the &#8220;honourary witnesses&#8221; represent the connection to the past and a commitment to the future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the M\u00e9tis Nation of Ontario (\u201cMNO\u201d) and the Government of Canada signing a ground-breaking M\u00e9tis Government Recognition and Self-Government Agreement that set out a new government-to-government relationship between Canada and Ontario M\u00e9tis. The RIA signed on Tuesday is a significant step forward in implementing the hard fought gains secured in that landmark M\u00e9tis Self-Government Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MNO Councilor for Region 4 Mitch Case signed on behalf of the Region and MNO President Margaret Froh signed on behalf of the MNO. Kim Powley and Yvonne Jensen signed on behalf of the Historic Sault Ste.
