{"id":43958,"date":"2021-04-21T08:23:05","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T12:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=43958"},"modified":"2021-04-19T10:24:43","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T14:24:43","slug":"romance-scams-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2021\/04\/21\/romance-scams-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Romance Scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Competition Bureau of Canada has published the <em><u>The Little Black Book of Scams 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Edition<\/u><\/em> and it is available online at <em>https:\/\/www.competitionbureau.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/cb-bc.nsf\/eng\/04333.htm<\/em><em>. <\/em>The information is invaluable and should be of interest to virtually everyone.\u00a0 Over the next few months we will be publishing the information from the <em><u>The Little Black Book of Scams 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Edition, <\/u><\/em>one scam at a time.<em><u>\u00a0 <\/u><\/em>\u00a0Last week we published Health and Medical Scams.\u00a0 Today the topic is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Romance Scams<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who is really behind the keyboard?<\/p>\n<p>Keep your guard up and look out for potential scammers who will try to lower your defences by appealing to your romantic and compassionate side.\u00a0 They can prey on you on popular dating sites as well as on fake ones.<\/p>\n<p>On a real dating site, a scammer might send you a few messages and a good-looking photo of themselves, or of someone they claim to be.\u00a0 Once you are charmed, they will start asking your to send money.\u00a0 They may claim to have a very sick family member or a desperate situation with which they need your help. Once you give them the money, they often disappear.\u00a0 (My note; <em>Or others have been known to continue to ask for money, each time for a specific situation, and knowing that even should you begin to question their honesty will often not seek help due to embarrassment for getting hooked.\u00a0 People have lost their life savings to these particularly heinous fraudsters.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A fraudster can also create a fake dating site where you pay for each message you send and receive.\u00a0 To keep your writing back and paying, the scammer may hook you in with vague emails about their love and desire for you.<\/p>\n<p>In many cases, the scammer may even arrange to meet up with you in person to make their fraud seem more credible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips to protect yourself:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never send money or give financial details on a dating site.<\/li>\n<li>Trust your instincts, ask questions and carefully read the terms and conditions before signing up.<\/li>\n<li>Know which services are free, which ones cost money and what it takes to cancel your account.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you use only legitimate and reputable dating sites.
