{"id":43616,"date":"2021-04-07T08:24:47","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T12:24:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=43616"},"modified":"2021-04-07T08:24:47","modified_gmt":"2021-04-07T12:24:47","slug":"wavs-identity-theft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2021\/04\/07\/wavs-identity-theft\/","title":{"rendered":"WAVS &#8211; Identity Theft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Competition Bureau of Canada has published the <em>The Little Black Book of Scams 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Edition<\/em> and it is available online at <em>https:\/\/www.competitionbureau.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/cb-bc.nsf\/eng\/04333.htm<\/em><em>. <\/em>The information is invaluable and should be of interest to virtually everyone.\u00a0 Over the next few months we will be publishing the information from the <em>The Little Black Book of Scams 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Edition, <\/em>one scam at a time.<em>\u00a0 <\/em>\u00a0Last week we published Subscription Traps.\u00a0 Today the topic is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Identity Theft<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Help ensure your identity remains yours alone!<\/p>\n<p>Scammers are always on the lookout to collect or reproduce your personal information to commit fraud.\u00a0 Thieves can make purchases using your accounts, obtain passports receive government benefits, apply for loans, and more.\u00a0 This could turn your life upside down.\u00a0 They look for credit card information, bank account details, full name and signature, date of birth, social insurance number, full address, mother\u2019s maiden name, online usernames and passwords, driver\u2019s license number and passport number.<\/p>\n<p>Identity theft is a serious crime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips to protect yourself:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never provide your personal information over the phone, via test message, email or the internet.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid public computers or Wi-Fi hotspots, such as in coffee shops, to access or provide personal information; they put you at risk.<\/li>\n<li>Create strong and unique passwords for each of your online accounts. Password-protect your devices and home Wi-Fi network.<\/li>\n<li>Use a secure and reputable payment service when buying online \u2013 look for a URL staring with \u201chttps\u201d and a closed padlock symbol.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid giving out personal information on social media. It can be used along with your pictures to commit fraud.<\/li>\n<li>Always shield your PIN when using your credit card.
