The Hon. Erin O\u2019Toole, Leader of Canada\u2019s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on the sad anniversary of the massacre at the \u00c9cole polytechnique:<\/p>\n
\n\u201cOn December 6, 1989, a misogynist murderer, towering with horrible hate, broke the dreams of young women who had their whole lives ahead of them.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cOn that day, Canada was the victim of a terrorist attack and a feminicide.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThat terrorist tried to make our country pay for our commitment to gender equality.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cAlthough he wanted to take his revenge on the emancipation of women, although he wanted to make us pay for our deepest values, his horrible crime was unable to do it.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThe massacre at the \u00c9cole Polytechnique showed our whole country how fragile progress can be.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cBut our country never gave up in the face of terror.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThe women who tragically died that day are still alive today, through all the little girls who dream big and seek a better life.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThey live through every woman who receives her iron ring as an engineer.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThey live through women MPs at the House of Commons and in provincial legislatures.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cAnd they live in the heart of the families who have unfairly lost a loved one.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cI stand up to say loudly and clearly that we will never, never forget their names.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cGenevi\u00e8ve Bergeron, H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz, Maryse Lagani\u00e8re, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Mich\u00e8le Richard, Annie St-Arneault and Annie Turcotte.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThose names are engraved in the memory of our nation. They are symbols of the freedoms we cherish.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThirty-one years later, their names resonate across the country as we remember the sacrifices, the sorrows and the tragedies women suffered in the sake of equality between men and women.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cWhat seems basic today is the result of the long battles of brave women who have changed the history of our country.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThe victims of Polytechnique are among them.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cDuring this pandemic, we must act against that other crisis, the increase of the violence against women.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cToo many women are subjected to bullying and domestic violence.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cWe must do everything to ensure that another tragedy like the one at \u00c9cole Polytechnique never happens again.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThe memory of the victims guides us and makes us realize that we must never let down our guard.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cI remember you.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cAll of Canada remembers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The Hon.
