This week\u2019s New Books are \u201cChoppy Water\u201d by Stuart Woods, \u201cA Private Cathedral\u201d by James Lee Burke, \u201cThe Silent Wife\u201d by Karin Slaughter and \u201cA Forgotten Murder\u201d by Jude Deveraux.<\/p>\n

The New Movies cataloged this week are \u201c2 Brothers and a Bride\u201d, \u201cThe Thomas Crown Affair\u201d, \u201cBirds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn\u201d and \u201cMidsommar\u201d! We have a couple older ones and a couple of newer ones! Check it out at the Wawa Public Library!<\/p>\n

Our staff pick of the week is James Patterson\u2019s \u201cCriss Cross\u201d!(from book jacket) A killer with all the skills of a master detective has made Alex Cross the subject of his deranged “investigation.” <\/strong><\/p>\n

In a Virginia penitentiary, Alex Cross and his partner, John Sampson, witness the execution of a killer they helped convict. Hours later, they are called to the scene of a copycat crime. A note signed “M” rests on the corpse. “You messed up big time, Dr. Cross.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Was an innocent man just put to death? Alex soon realizes he may have much to answer for, as “M” lures the detective out of the capital to the sites of multiple homicides, all marked with distressingly familiar details — details that conjure up decades-old cases. Details that conjure up Cross family secrets. Details that make clear that M is after a prize so dear that — were the killer to attain it — Alex’s heart would no longer have reason to beat.<\/em><\/p>\n

We are very proud to have received this amazing furniture from the Wawa Heritage Committee. At one point, these beautiful pieces of furniture were part of the d\u00e9cor of the Eagle\u2019s Nest.\u00a0 Many thanks to the Wawa Heritage Committee for allowing us to home, display and use these unique pieces.<\/p>\n

Sir James Dunn & his Eagle\u2019s Nest (by Johanna Rowe)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Born in 1874 in Bathurst Village, NB, James Hamet Dunn\u2019s legal prowess and business savvy made him a multi-millionaire by the age of 40.\u00a0 In 1921 he was bestowed with the title of Baronet in recognition of his war efforts during the First World War.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sir James Dunn is credited with single-handedly saving the steel industry in Sault Ste. Marie and iron mining operations in Wawa.\u00a0 A 1951 article in the Maclean\u2019s Magazine stated \u201cno Canadian lives more lavishly\u201d than Sir James.<\/em><\/p>\n

In 1945, Sir James directed the construction of a residence for his use when visiting the mining operations in Wawa.\u00a0 The Eagle\u2019s Nest has a commanding view over Wawa Lake, the town of Wawa, the Magpie River Valley, and Lake Superior.\u00a0 \u201cThe house was not elaborate but ultra modern for its time complete with a kitchen, breakfast nook, dining room, living room, sun porch, master bedroom and 3 guest bedrooms each complete with a 3 piece bathroom.\u201d (Heart of a Mountain \u2013 Soul of a Town, J. Morrison-Rowe, page 27)<\/em><\/p>\n

Following his death in 1955, the Eagle\u2019s Nest continued to be used by visiting dignitaries and company administrators.\u00a0 Social gatherings, retirement parties and meetings were a common use of the unique building and its lavish furnishings.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The MacLeod Mine and Eagle\u2019s Nest were abandoned in 1998.\u00a0 The Michipicoten Museum Society and Town of Wawa Heritage Committee salvaged some of the Eagle\u2019s Nest furnishings and the painted portrait of Sir James Dunn which used to hang in the front room above the fireplace. The Wawa Public Library is now home to Sir James\u2019 painting, 3 chairs, ottoman, and two end tables.<\/em><\/p>\n
