{"id":31904,"date":"2020-05-19T12:48:50","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T16:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=31904"},"modified":"2020-05-19T12:48:50","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T16:48:50","slug":"horwath-forces-a-vote-on-launching-a-full-independent-public-inquiry-into-ontarios-long-term-care-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2020\/05\/19\/horwath-forces-a-vote-on-launching-a-full-independent-public-inquiry-into-ontarios-long-term-care-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Horwath forces a vote on launching a full, independent public inquiry into Ontario\u2019s long-term care system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday afternoon, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario will vote on whether to hold a thorough, non-partisan, independent public inquiry \u2014 under\u00a0<em>The Public Inquiries Act<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 sparked by a motion by NDP Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since the pandemic began, more than 4,400 residents and staff at Ontario long term care homes have contracted COVID-19, with over 1,400 deaths to date, and more infections and deaths expected.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ford government is digging in their heels by insisting they\u2019ll hold a government-controlled\u00a0commission instead of a public inquiry,\u201d said Horwath. \u201cA government-controlled commission is just a review \u2014a back-room process that\u00a0won\u2019t give long-term care residents and their families, seniors entering care, and loved ones of COVID-19 victims the voice they deserve, the respect they deserve, or the major overhaul to long-term care that all long-term care residents need and deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A public inquiry is an official and independent process set out by law in\u00a0<em>The Public Inquiries Act<\/em>.
