The\u00a0\u00a0beloved singer and iconic frontman for the Juno Award-winning Kingston band, Downie was also a published poet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNaming the Poet Laureate Bill after Gord Downie is a fitting tribute to his memory and his legacy,\u201d Hatfield said.\u00a0Downie died in 2017 from a rare form of brain cancer. In his last years, Downie was an outspoken advocate for reconciliation with Canada\u2019s First Nation\u2019s Peoples.\u00a0\u201cOntario\u2019s Poet Laureate would act as Ontario\u2019s literacy ambassador, traveling around the province to bring attention to Ontario\u2019s great poets and works of poetry, as well as the beauty and value of poetry in our society,\u201d Hatfield said. \u201cThe Poet Laureate would lead workshops, take part in poetry readings and encourage students to engage with poetry at school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Music journalist and author Michael Barclay wrote in <em>Macleans <\/em>that, \u201cDownie is considered by a lay audience as one of Canada\u2019s greatest poets. Poetry and pop music are not strangers of course, just ask the committee who granted Bob Dylan the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hatfield pointed out that Canada\u2019s federal government has a Poet Laureate, as do several provinces.
