{"id":25349,"date":"2019-11-02T08:36:22","date_gmt":"2019-11-02T12:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=25349"},"modified":"2019-11-02T08:36:22","modified_gmt":"2019-11-02T12:36:22","slug":"etfo-members-deliver-overwhelming-mandate-for-strike-action-if-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2019\/11\/02\/etfo-members-deliver-overwhelming-mandate-for-strike-action-if-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"ETFO members deliver overwhelming mandate for strike action if needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Elementary Teachers\u2019 Federation of Ontario (ETFO) have given their union a strong mandate for central strike action should it be needed during ETFO\u2019s central bargaining negotiations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ETFO\u2019s teacher and occasional teacher members voted 98% in favour of strike action; and<\/li>\n<li>ETFO\u2019s education worker members voted 98% in favour of strike action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cTalks have stalled at ETFO\u2019s central bargaining tables. This is a wakeup call from our members to this government to get serious about key issues affecting educators and students including more supports for Special Education, class size and class structure, fair and transparent hiring practices, and preservation of the current Kindergarten program,\u201d said ETFO President Sam Hammond.<\/p>\n<p>Hammond said that a conciliator, appointed by the Minister of Labour, will meet with ETFO and the other parties at the central bargaining tables on November 4th.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe overwhelming mandate our members have given to ETFO clearly shows they want the Ford government to bargain in good faith and arrive at a deal that is fair and reasonable for our members and that actually supports the students in our schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPremier Ford and his Education Minister Stephen Lecce are fond of saying that they want kids to be in school. So do ETFO\u2019s 83,000 members. But it appears that only teachers and education professionals \u2013not the government \u2013are concerned with the quality of public education that students receive,\u201d added Hammond.<\/p>\n<p>Hammond said that the government is demanding an additional $150 million in cuts from elementary education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs funding for students with special needs to be sacrificed to meet the government\u2019s goal to cut costs? Class sizes have increased.
