{"id":24925,"date":"2019-10-11T08:02:39","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T12:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=24925"},"modified":"2019-10-11T07:58:31","modified_gmt":"2019-10-11T11:58:31","slug":"opp-takes-part-in-operation-impact-campaign-october-11-14-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2019\/10\/11\/opp-takes-part-in-operation-impact-campaign-october-11-14-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"OPP Takes Part in Operation Impact Campaign (October 11 &#8211; 14, 2019)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers prepare to police some of the heaviest traffic volumes of the year, they are reporting <strong>216<\/strong> fatal motor vehicle collisions that have claimed the lives of <strong>239<\/strong> people so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>Heading into the Thanksgiving Long Weekend, motor vehicle collisions on OPP-patrolled roads sit at <strong>53,036, <\/strong>up from last year when collisions had reached <strong>52,676<\/strong> by this time.<\/p>\n<p>Again this year, preventable deaths account for a significant number of the fatalities. Speed is the lead causal factor to date with <strong>46<\/strong> deaths attributed to this aggressive driving behaviour. Lack of seat belt use among drivers and passengers accounts for <strong>44<\/strong> fatalities. Driver inattention has been linked to <strong>42 <\/strong>deaths and <strong>33<\/strong> people died in crashes that involved alcohol and\/or drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers account for <strong>162<\/strong> of those who died, <strong>53<\/strong> of the deceased were passengers while pedestrians make up <strong>24<\/strong> of the deaths. Those who are travelling by motor vehicle this weekend should take note that Friday is the day of the week that marks the highest number of road deaths this year <strong>(42)<\/strong>, followed by Saturday <strong>(37)<\/strong>, Sunday <strong>(36)<\/strong> and Monday <strong>(33).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, many innocent people of all ages pay the price with their lives because of drivers who ignore their responsibility to share the road safely. Before you head out this Thanksgiving Long Weekend, as a driver, please remember that every motorist, passenger, pedestrian and cyclist has the right to be safe and that safe roads start with you.
