Firefighters from the Wawa Volunteer Fire Department are<\/strong>\u00a0urging families in Wawa to practice their home fire escape plan as part of Fire Prevention Week.<\/p>\n

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 6-12, 2019. This year\u2019s theme is \u201cNot Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!\u201d When the smoke alarms sound, everyone must know where to go \u2013 that\u2019s why it is so important for everyone to have working smoke alarms and to develop and practice a home fire escape plan.<\/p>\n

In a fire, you may have only seconds to safely escape your home.<\/strong>\u00a0Practice your home fire escape plan and make sure everyone can get out safely.<\/p>\n

Fire and smoke can spread quickly, so be prepared in advance with these simple steps for home fire escape planning:<\/p>\n

Assess the needs of everyone in your home<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Identify anyone who requires assistance to get out of the home safely, such as small children or older adults<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Make sure that you have working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Identify all possible exits (doors and windows) and make sure they work<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Know two ways out of all areas, if possible<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Everyone must know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds<\/strong><\/p>\n

          Assign someone to help those who need assistance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          Identify a safe meeting place outside<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          Call the fire department from a neighbour\u2019s home or cell phone<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Practice your home fire escape plan<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Have everyone participate<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

            Make changes to your plan if necessary<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
