{"id":2357,"date":"2017-04-12T11:20:02","date_gmt":"2017-04-12T15:20:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=2357"},"modified":"2017-04-12T12:04:31","modified_gmt":"2017-04-12T16:04:31","slug":"ndp-raises-case-of-hydro-bill-topping-50-of-income","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2017\/04\/12\/ndp-raises-case-of-hydro-bill-topping-50-of-income\/","title":{"rendered":"NDP raises case of hydro bill topping 50% of income"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Apr 12, 2017 @ 11:20<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, April 11, 2017; during question period, NDP Energy critic Peter Tabuns grilled Premier Kathleen Wynne over her failure to take action on soaring hydro prices, raising the case of Krysta\u00a0Meecham-Robertson,\u00a0whose $800 per month income is more than half wiped out by a $450 monthly hydro bill.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPremier Wynne hasn\u2019t taken a dime off people\u2019s hydro bills,\u201d said Toronto-Danforth MPP Peter Tabuns. \u201cAdvertisements paid for with public money don\u2019t put food on the table for people like Krysta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Krysta, a resident of Nipissing, already takes advantage of the Ontario Energy Support Program, the Rural Rate Protection program and is exempt from being charged for debt retirement.\u00a0 She still has to choose between paying her hydro bills and buying food.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly the premier and her Liberal government aren\u2019t doing enough for people like Krysta,\u201d said Tabuns. \u201cWhen will the premier stop with the partisan posturing and actually present a detailed plan in this legislature to fix the mess she has helped create in our hydro system?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The NDP recently released a plan to lower hydro bills for people like Krysta by up to 30 per cent.\u00a0The plan reverses the Liberal government\u2019s costly privatization in our hydro system, and offers a number of immediate steps and long-term fixes to the hydro system to keep rates down \u2013 including putting Hydro One back into public hands.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur plan will cut bills immediately, and bring an additional $7 billion in dividends to the province by stopping Premier Wynne\u2019s wrong-headed sell-off of Hydro One. That\u2019s money that can be used in schools and hospitals,\u201d said Tabuns. \u201cLast week, the Wynne Liberals and Conservatives blocked the opportunity to make that bill cut happen quickly.
