{"id":2355,"date":"2017-04-12T11:18:17","date_gmt":"2017-04-12T15:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=2355"},"modified":"2017-09-12T22:26:16","modified_gmt":"2017-09-13T02:26:16","slug":"dryden-ignace-opp-warn-of-ice-safety-as-temperatures-warm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2017\/04\/12\/dryden-ignace-opp-warn-of-ice-safety-as-temperatures-warm\/","title":{"rendered":"Dryden &#038; Ignace OPP &#8211; Warn of Ice Safety as temperatures warm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Apr 12, 2017 @ 11:18<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The members of the Dryden and Ignace Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind the public of the dangers of thin ice.\u00a0 The warm weather means ice conditions are deteriorating quickly on all bodies of water in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The OPP would like to remind people of the following:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Ice begins to be &#8220;safe&#8221; at around 4 &#8211; 6 inches thickness.\u00a0 Do not even walk on ice 3&#8243; or less in thickness.\u00a0 However, even at 9&#8243; &#8211; 10&#8243; thickness, there may be unforeseen hazards such as a flowing current underneath that is weakening the underside of the ice.\u00a0 In this instance, even the thickness is not a good indicator of safety, as the ice could collapse at any time.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 In general, the rules for ice thickness measurements are:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 3&#8243; (7 cm) (new ice) &#8211; KEEP OFF<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 4&#8243; (10 cm) &#8211; suitable for ice fishing, cross-country skiing and walking (approx. 200 pounds)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 5&#8243; (12 cm) &#8211; suitable for a single snowmobile or ATV (approx. 800 pounds)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 8&#8243; &#8211; 12&#8243; (20 &#8211; 30 cm) &#8211; suitable for one care, group of people (approx. 1500 &#8211; 2000 pounds)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 12&#8243; &#8211; 15&#8243; (30 &#8211; 38 cm) &#8211; suitable for a light pickup truck or a van<\/p>\n<p>People should always remember that these measurements do not indicate ice safety in every instance.\u00a0 It is always important to follow safety practices when traveling on the ice, including:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Tell someone your travel plans, route and estimated time of return<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Wear proper gear such as a floater coat and carry survival equipment<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; If you don&#8217;t know, DON&#8217;T GO!<\/p>\n<p>For these and more ice safety tips go to\u00a0<strong><u>www.opp.ca.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-101\" src=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/OPPCrest-300x236.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"133\" \/><strong>About the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)<\/strong> - The Ontario Provincial Police is<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0one of North America's largest deployed police services with more than 6,200 uniformed officers, 3,100 civilian employees and 800 Auxiliary officers.
