Sol Mamakwa, the NDP\u2019s critic for indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, issued the following statement calling on the Ford government to support the community of Cat Lake, and their request for immediate action on the community’s state of emergency.<\/p>\n

Mamakwa, the MPP for Kiiwetinoong, joined Cat Lake community leaders who were at Queen\u2019s Park on Friday to press\u00a0the Ford government to take care of the health and safety of the\u00a0children in Cat Lake First Nation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cCat Lake First Nation declared a State of Emergency back in January due to dangerous mould levels in their houses.\u00a0 Since then, three children have been medically evacuated out of the community because of life-threatening illnesses.\u00a0More children are suffering from respiratory illnesses and skin diseases.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n As a signatory to Treaty 9, the Ford government must provide immediate\u00a0medical support as\u00a0requested by the Cat Lake First Nation.\u00a0Ontario has a responsibility to uphold its Treaty obligations. \u00a0As in the health crises declared in\u00a0other Treaty 9 communities like Kashechewan and Attawapiskat, Ontario must ensure that children, families and Elders are safe.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n New Democrats support\u00a0Cat Lake\u2019s declaration of Jordan\u2019s principle, and\u00a0call on Premier Ford\u00a0to work with the community\u00a0to\u00a0provide basic and essential\u00a0health care to the children and members who need it now.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Sol Mamakwa, the NDP\u2019s critic for indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, issued the following statement calling on the Ford government to support the community of Cat Lake, and their request for immediate action on the community’s state of emergency.
