Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to provide some safety reminders for the snowmobile community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before you leave&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>fill up your gas tank<\/li>\n<li>check the weather forecast before heading out.<\/li>\n<li>contact the local snowmobile club to check trail and ice conditions<\/li>\n<li>dress appropriately &#8211; wear clothing in layers, and make your top layer a snowmobile suit or other windproof layer<\/li>\n<li>tell someone\u00a0:<\/li>\n<li>where you&#8217;re going<\/li>\n<li>the route you will take<\/li>\n<li>a description of your snowmobile<\/li>\n<li>when you expect to retur<\/li>\n<li><strong>never<\/strong> travel alone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Remember:<\/strong> Exposure to extreme cold can lead to frostbite and hypothermia. Your risk goes up as the temperature goes down.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wind chill at or below -25 C: risk of frostbite to exposed skin<\/li>\n<li>Wind chill at or below -35 C: frostbite in 10 minutes or less<\/li>\n<li>Wind chill at or below -60 C: frostbite in less than 2 minutes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What to bring&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pack a snowmobile survival kit that includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>first aid kit<\/li>\n<li>GPS unit, trail map and compass<\/li>\n<li>matches (or lighter) in a waterproof container<\/li>\n<li>knife, saw or axe<\/li>\n<li>ice picks (if you must cross over a frozen river or lake)<\/li>\n<li>flashlight<\/li>\n<li>whistle<\/li>\n<li>high-energy food like nuts or granola bars<\/li>\n<li>an extra set of dry clothing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You should also bring a snowmobile mechanical kit that includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>spare spark plug and drive belt<\/li>\n<li>tow rope<\/li>\n<li>screwdriver, wrenches and hammer<\/li>\n<li>owner&#8217;s manual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>While you are driving&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>always drive within your ability<\/li>\n<li>take extra care on corners and hills<\/li>\n<li>obey speed limits and road\/trail signs<\/li>\n<li>always stay on the right-hand side of the trail<\/li>\n<li>use appropriate hand signals before stopping, slowing down or turning<\/li>\n<li>take extra care at road and rail crossings &#8211; cross roads at designated crossings and at a 90-degree angle so you can cross safely and quickly<\/li>\n<li>never ride on private property without permission of the land owner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Driving at night&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reduce your speed &#8211; some hazards are harder to see in the dark<\/li>\n<li>use your headlights and drive at a speed where they can shine ahead of you<\/li>\n<li>wear clothing that has reflective markings so that you are more visible to others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Driving on ice&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>avoid driving on unfamiliar frozen lakes and rivers, as open water may not be visible<\/li>\n<li>if you must drive over ice, wear a buoyant snowmobile suit<\/li>\n<li>always drive on ice that is new, hard and clear<\/li>\n<li>never drive on ice that is slushy, weak, near moving water or that has recently thawed and refrozen<\/li>\n<li>check ice conditions with the local snowmobile club before you head out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;The OPP is committed to ensuring that snowmobiling remains a safe recreational activity in Ontario.\u00a0Our continued partnership with the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) will ensure public safety on our trails across the Province.&#8221; Staff Sergeant Michael Maville.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the snowmobile season heightens, the Sault Ste.
