{"id":17017,"date":"2018-11-26T06:17:25","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T11:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=17017"},"modified":"2018-11-26T06:17:58","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T11:17:58","slug":"ndp-tables-bill-for-30-day-max-waits-for-youth-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2018\/11\/26\/ndp-tables-bill-for-30-day-max-waits-for-youth-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"NDP tables bill for 30-day max waits for youth mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MPP Bhutila Karpoche, Member for Parkdale-High Park and Official Opposition critic for Mental Health and Addictions, tabled a bill last week that would cap the wait time for children and youth accessing mental health and addiction services at 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Right now in Ontario, one in five young people are living with mental health disorders that significantly impact their lives, and the lives of those around them. 12,000 children and youth are currently stuck on wait lists to access mental health services, with communities\u2019 average wait times between three months and a year and a half.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny child or youth struggling with mental health challenges needs help \u2013 not just a spot on a long waitlist,\u201d said Karpoche. \u201cWe are losing children and youth to suicide because we are not providing them the mental health and addictions care in a timely manner. We can do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Karpoche was joined at Queen\u2019s Park by Martha McGroarty. McGroarty\u2019s daughter died by suicide at the age of 20, just a few weeks after being discharged from the hospital where she was told that the program she needed was not available, and was advised\u00a0to wait and to keep checking the website for intake dates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too late for Martha\u2019s daughter, but let\u2019s make sure it\u2019s not too late for all the rest of Ontario\u2019s young people. The government needs to take all necessary steps to make it possible,\u201d said Karpoche.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen mental health issues are addressed earlier in life, the care and services provided are more effective and children and youth sustain less trauma in the interim.
