{"id":13408,"date":"2018-06-21T08:39:01","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T12:39:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=13408"},"modified":"2018-06-21T08:39:01","modified_gmt":"2018-06-21T12:39:01","slug":"statement-by-minister-joly-on-national-indigenous-peoples-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2018\/06\/21\/statement-by-minister-joly-on-national-indigenous-peoples-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Statement by Minister Joly on National Indigenous Peoples Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1\">\n<p>Today, on the summer solstice\u2014the longest day of the year and a special day marked by many Indigenous communities\u2014we come together to celebrate the culture, heritage and contributions of Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1\">\n<p>It is also National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time for all of us to learn more about the diverse cultures and languages of First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis Peoples across this land, and work together to advance reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>Language is an important part of identity, and helping strengthen Indigenous languages is integral to reconciliation. That is why, with the support of the Assembly of First Nations, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the M\u00e9tis Nation, our government is taking another step to preserve, promote and revitalize Indigenous languages. We will be engaging with First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis across <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> this summer to support the co\u2011development of Indigenous languages legislation. Together, we are forging new ways of understanding, in which Indigenous teachings, culture, traditions and practices are embraced in <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>National Indigenous Peoples Day is also a key part of the nearly 1,600 Celebrate Canada events happening across the country from <span class=\"xn-chron\">June 21 to July 1<\/span>. As Minister of Canadian Heritage, I encourage all Canadians to join a community celebration for National Indigenous Peoples Day. Whether it&#8217;s the Indigenous Peoples Festival in <span class=\"xn-location\">Edmonton<\/span>, APTN Indigenous Day Live in <span class=\"xn-location\">Winnipeg<\/span>or the Journ\u00e9e nationale des Autochtones in <span class=\"xn-location\">Val-d&#8217;Or, Quebec<\/span>, there are a number of activities taking place across the country that will enable Canadians to learn more about Indigenous culture.
