Ontario New Democrat candidates Judith Monteith-Farrell (Thunder Bay-Atikokan)\u00a0and Lise Vaugeois (Thunder Bay-Superior North),\u00a0released the following statement responding\u00a0to Liberal MPP Bill Mauro\u2019s comments on the Bethammi Nursing Home inspection findings:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were heartbroken to learn\u00a0that residents at the Bethammi Nursing Home\u00a0were left unbathed for weeks, without enough incontinence care, and not getting the care they needed.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
When our seniors need long-term care, they deserve to know they\u2019ll not only be safe, but that they\u2019ll be treated with dignity and receive the highest quality of care.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Wynne government created a crisis in\u00a0Ontario\u2019s long-term care system and instead of taking responsibility,\u00a0local\u00a0Liberal\u00a0MPP and minister\u00a0Bill\u00a0Mauro,\u00a0tried to\u00a0shift\u00a0blame from the Wynne\u00a0government to\u00a0the hardworking staff of the facility instead, staff who, already, are stretched\u00a0thin as a result of years of chronic\u00a0under-funding\u00a0to long-term care facilities.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It\u2019s no way to treat our Thunder Bay\u00a0seniors, or the people who work so hard to care for them.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s critical that family members of long-term care residents are heard and it\u2019s so important that staff have the supports they need to do their jobs. They work so hard, day in and day out, but with continued cuts to our long-term care system, it\u2019s no wonder they feel defeated.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Our communities deserve leadership that will offer seniors and their families change for the better.\u00a0\u00a0Andrea Horwath and the NDP’s plan\u00a0to fix the long-term care crisis\u00a0includes updating the Long-Term Care Residents\u2019 Bill of Rights,\u00a0the creation of\u00a040,000 more long-term care beds, including 15,000 new beds over the next five years, while ensuring every resident is offered a minimum of four hours of hands-on care per day. Our plan also includes launching a province-wide \u2018find-and-fix\u2019 inquiry into systemic problems in our long-term care system.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
