{"id":11021,"date":"2018-03-11T08:34:45","date_gmt":"2018-03-11T12:34:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=11021"},"modified":"2018-03-09T10:36:04","modified_gmt":"2018-03-09T15:36:04","slug":"opp-conducts-distracted-driving-campaign-march-12-18-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2018\/03\/11\/opp-conducts-distracted-driving-campaign-march-12-18-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"OPP Conducts Distracted Driving Campaign (March 12 -18, 2018)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Mar 11, 2018 @ 08:34<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"divider\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/OPPCrest-e1501592123859.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-101\" src=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/OPPCrest-300x236.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a>Over March Break, the Ontario Provincial Police will be highly focused on what has been the deadliest kind of driver on OPP-patrolled roads for the fifth consecutive year &#8211; the inattentive driver.<\/p>\n<p>Inattentive drivers were behind <strong>83 <\/strong>road fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads in 2017, surpassing speed-related deaths <strong>(75)<\/strong>, alcohol\/drug-related deaths <strong>(46)<\/strong> and those that are linked to lack of seat belt use <strong>(49). <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since 2009 (the year Ontario Distracted Driving laws took effect), <strong>692<\/strong> have been killed on OPP-patrolled roads in collisions that involved an inattentive driver.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By now, the majority of drivers and passengers have witnessed, had a close call or been involved in a collision with a driver who was texting, talking on their cell phone or engaged in some other form of distraction. Last year, the OPP responded to <strong>8,711<\/strong> crashes that were linked to driver inattention. &#8211; OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair, Provincial Commander of Traffic Safety and Operational Support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DID YOU KNOW? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If convicted of distracted driving, a fully licenced driver will receive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a fine of $400, plus a victim surcharge and court fee, for a total of $490 if settled out of court<\/li>\n<li>fine of up to $1,000 if you receive a summons or fight your ticket<\/li>\n<li>three demerit points applied to your driver&#8217;s record<\/li>\n<li>Drivers who endanger others because of any distraction, including hand-held and hands-free devices, may still be charged with Careless Driving under the\u00a0<em>Highway Traffic Act<\/em>\u00a0or even Dangerous Driving under the Criminal Code of Canada.
