{"id":1091,"date":"2017-02-28T18:41:32","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T23:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wawa-news.com\/?p=1091"},"modified":"2017-09-12T10:36:27","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T14:36:27","slug":"carol-hughes-delivers-online-algoma-passenger-train-petition-in-house-of-commons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/index.php\/2017\/02\/28\/carol-hughes-delivers-online-algoma-passenger-train-petition-in-house-of-commons\/","title":{"rendered":"Carol Hughes Delivers Online Algoma Passenger Train Petition in House of Commons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Feb 28, 2017 @ 18:41<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1092\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1092\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1092\" src=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSC05103-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSC05103-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wawa-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSC05103.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1092\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Last ACR Passenger Train to leave Hawk Junction on July 13, 2015.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An online petition with more than 550 signatures in support of Algoma Passenger Train Services has been presented in the House of Commons by Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP, Carol Hughes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor over a hundred years the Algoma Passenger Train offered safe, affordable, all-season access to the Algoma wilderness while supporting a strong tourism economy along its route.,\u201d said Hughes\u00a0 \u201cThe train provided access for First Nations to their remote and traditional territory and was the only safe option available for 75% of the properties along the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The petition was sponsored by the Coalition for the Algoma Passenger Trains (CAPT) who created two online petitions as well as postcard and paper petition campaigns.\u00a0 With concerns about safety, access, and the economic well-being of tourism in the region, CAPT has worked to have passenger service reinstated since it was discontinued in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince passenger services stopped, people have been stranded when their vehicles have been badly damaged on industrial roads that are not maintained for public use,\u201d said Hughes.
