Driver of Car Charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death – Motorcyclist Dies from Injuries in Collision

On Sunday, July 16, 2017 at approximately 8:40 am, officers from the Greenstone Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with Greenstone Fire Service and Superior North Emergency Medical Service (EMS) responded to a motor vehicle collision between a car and a motorcycle on Highway 11 at Kenogamisis Dam Road.

During this investigation the driver of the car fled the scene into the bushes but was ultimately located and charged with criminal driving and impaired related offences causing bodily harm.

The male driver of the motorcycle thrown into the ditch on the North side of the road and sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to the Geraldton District Hospital and was flown to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre where his condition worsened. On Tuesday, July 18, 2017, he died from his injuries.

Deceased is Robert GRATTON, 64 years of age, from Casselman, Ontario.

Bradley LARSEN, 22 years of age, from Geraldton, Ontario was re-arrested and charged with the following offences.

  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death contrary to section 249(4) of the Criminal Code
  • Impaired Driving Causing Death contrary to section 255(3) of the Criminal Code
  • Operation of a Motor Vehicle with Over 80 mgs. of Alcohol Causing Death contrary to section 255(2.1) of the Criminal Code
  • Failure to Stop at Scene of Accident Involving Bodily Harm contrary to section 252(1.2) of the Criminal Code  

He is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on July 21, 2017 for a bail hearing.
