Northern Ontario Party Speaks about Education

Jun 22, 2017 @ 08:18

As we have travelled across Northern Ontario and talked to new and potential members, businesses, educators, municipal governments and other northerners it has become apparent that there are major problems within our educational system. Many boards are faced with school closures, underfunding, and a declining student base. There are a number of factors causing this situation but several glaring issues require immediate attention and change.

We would like to bring your attention to what every other party avoids or dances around.

EDUCATION

It is about time that this “elephant in the room” gets discussed instead of ignored or on the back burner. It is time to be fair and let the people speak.

The Northern Ontario Party is therefore calling on the current Liberal government to do the following;

  • Introduce legislation in the fall sitting to provide for a referendum to be held in conjunction with a provincial general election as such legislation does not currently exist.
  • That a plebiscite be held during the next provincial election on the educational system to determine from the people whether there should be;
  1. Consolidation under one school system

or

  1. B) remain with the status quo of 4 school systems based on religion and language.

This would allow the voters to decide on public education in Ontario.

We are also calling on the current government and all parties to stop avoiding bringing attention to issues you are afraid to discuss and resolve and provide all Northern Ontario school boards equal funding that reflects the real needs & challenges for our northern students which are different from Southern Ontario school boards.
