Hwy 519 and Hwy 17 (from Wawa to White River) remains closed at this time.

At 8:44 p.m. Environment Canada continued the freezing rain warning in effect for Wawa, Pukaskwa Park, White River, and Dubreuilville.

Significant ice build-up due to freezing rain is expected or occurring.

Freezing rain will continue this evening in northern areas of the region towards Pukaskwa.

Latest indications suggest the precipitation will become intermittent and light for a few hours later tonight into early Thursday morning. The next surge of moisture from a low approaching from the southern Plains states is currently expected to arrive in the form of rain for the Wawa area Thursday morning.

However, the latest indications suggest that areas further north and west such as Pukaskwa and White River may receive another round of freezing rain on Thursday.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and extremely hazardous. Beware of branches or electrical wires that could break under the weight of ice. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. For information on emergency plans and kits go to http://www.getprepared.gc.ca/

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.

Freezing rain warning in effect for:

  • Marathon – Schreiber
  • Nipigon – Rossport

Significant ice build-up due to a long-lasting period of freezing rain is expected or occurring.

Significant ice storm continues through Thursday.

Freezing precipitation has become quite patchy and intermittent this evening as expected, bringing a few hour break from this ice storm. However, another surge of moisture from the next low pressure system approaching from the Southern Plains States will arrive early Thursday morning. Freezing rain and ice pellets will once again become more extensive by Thursday morning, then continue through the day before a changeover to a few cm of snow on Thursday evening.

Total ice accumulations of 20 to 30 mm are expected by late Thursday. Northerly winds gusting to 50 km/h will continue tonight but ease somewhat on Thursday. Ice-laden trees and limbs on power lines may result in possible widespread and extended power outages across the region.

Travel is not recommended. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and extremely hazardous. Beware of branches or electrical wires that could break under the weight of ice. Stay away from fallen power lines. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.

The freezing sleeting rain has begun again. Remain aware of walking/driving conditions and remain safe.

Unmanned barricade at Dubreuilville (Hwy 519).

At 4:12 p.m., Highway 519 and Highway 17 (Wawa to White River) remains closed. Although the freezing rain has stopped in Wawa about two hours ago, everything remains glazed with ice. The same conditions exist in Dubreuilville, but they have been hit harder with ice pellets to the depth of 3.25 cms.

The radar shows that rain is still heading our way. The temperature in Wawa at this time is 0.9C, so the ice-coated surfaces are not melting, and remain very slippery. If you are walking, be careful.

Wawa-news could find no mention of Highway 519 being closed. Nothing from OPP nor from Ontario 511 (website or tweets).

Apr 26, 2017 @ 13:45

At 1:27 p.m. Superior East OPP issued a media release that Highway 17 was closed from Wawa to White River due to freezing rain.

Apr 26, 2017 @ 12:05

At Noon, OPP closed Highway 17 from Wawa to White River due to poor weather conditions. Barricades are up at the intersection of Hwy 17/Hwy 101 at the Goose.

It has been a mix of freezing rain, sleet and ice pellets in Wawa since at least 6 this morning. Everything in Wawa is glazed with ice and Dubreuilville has streets of icy snow. I measured 5 mm of ice buildup (acreation) on my beetle.

If you are travelling for any reason, be careful.

This photo was supplied by a reader in Dubreuilville, and shows 3.25 cm of ice pellet buildup on the street.

  1. My husband has been stranded there since noon not one opp officer has given anyone an explanation why. It is raining there no ice. Everything closes in white river at 9 pm. Only motel is full. Families with children stranded on hwy and its -3. This is an emergency someone help those people they cannot spend the night in their cars on hwy It’s 9pm!

Editor – Unfortunately, this extended closure is indeed a problem for travellers because Northern Ontario highways often close due to weather conditions. That said, everyone should always be prepared for emergencies with an emergency kit and blankets in their vehicles.

  2. I spoke to an OPP officer at the Wawa road closure. She was very friendly and explained to me (and 2 others while I was standing there!) that it was due to ice and she couldn’t predict when the weather would clear. That’s 3 people anyway. The Editor’s comment is bang on.
